We finally found the old privy we were looking for at our 1800's farm and I've shown you the good stuff already. Part of the heartbreak in this particular privy were the remains of at least four ancient canning jars :'(. They were a beautiful aqua, and the pictures I'm showing were the very tops. I put the sharp edges to a grinding wheel because I still wanted to display these things; I'm very partial to canning jars because we spent a lot of time using them when I was a kid! Over the years, I've collected several game balls for milestones or achievement, and Miss halfdime is adding to the collection. I figured out a way to keep and display the tops of those old canning jars - this one is holding the game ball from my last college pitching victory (only 27 years ago).

That'l work!
I'm curious as to how you finally located the old outhouse.
Just by scratching and digging until you found some sign?

I have to locate one on my folks farm the next time I am in the States. It should be near some prickly pear and mesquite scrub so will be a challenge.

Are you still digging / searching?

I spotted a slight depression in a place that made sense then pushed a 4' probe easily as far as it would go. Bingo!

Halfdime,
Like a piece of rebar or something?
Do you mean you just hammered it in and it hit something?

I made a probe with 3/4" steel pipe, four feet long and T'd for leverage. Typically, privy soil isn't compacted like native soil, and the probe will penetrate it pretty easily. All around this privy, and I've done hundreds of samples, we reach a solid layer about 18" down. I pushed it in and knew from the minimal resistance that I'd hit paydirt (so to speak).
