:dontknow: I've been CRH for over a year & have gone thru some 300,000 coins. I've yet to find a 1970. I've talked with other CRHs in my MD club & they haven't found any either. Even reading the totals of CardsNCoins & DB23, with all the good results they are getting. They haven't posted finding any either. I have a theory that the 1970 halfs never made it East of the Mississippi River. Anyone else have any ideas?

limited numbers to begin with used for making mint "collections"( they were in mint sets only --a mint set has to get broken up to put a 1970 half in the wild) - which makes em a hard find --finding bens and walkers are hard too and they made lots of them :wink:

The 1970 half dollar was not produced for circulation. Only 2,150,000 were minted in Denver and only 2,632,810 in San Francisco. They were only available from the mint in sets I believe. Others can tell you more about this. The 1970 half is what is referred to as NIFC (not intended for circulation).

I've found like 6-7 since March, including 2 in November. Pretty sure CNC also recently posted a 1970 find.

I've found two. And they ain't for sale for a very long time.

Keep on Rollin' !

I have found only 2 in 2011, and like db23 mentioned, one of them was just a few weeks ago.

Upon further review, I have found 6 this year. One is missing from the picture because I gave it to another forum member in exchange for some coin comparitor parts... The one all the way to the left is the only S that I've found, the others are all D.

Found a '70d in October. Pulled it from a CWR.

Very fun to find... Gotta get lucky tho... Not too many in circulation.

I have found 3 lifetime I think. 2 D's and 1 S if I remember correctly.

If you really want one, I have seen 1970 mint sets selling on eBay in the $7-$9 range.

I have two (both are 'D') - neither were finds.

The first is still in the mint set as it was given to me.

The second one I got in trade - for some coin sorter parts.

I am stationed up on the North East coast myself and have found 3-4 in the last 3 months. When I was in Texas, however, I never found any. I usually put them away from the rest of my coins, as they don't really qualify as junk silver to me, even though they fall in that category.

It's a thrill to find just cause they are sort of rare. But really are they? You're talking a $10 coin. I'll take a walker or ben anyway

Years of casino slot searching and I never found one...until I got into boxes, then one finally showed itself (70-D). They are indeed toughies.

Things I've found more frequently than 1970 halves:

* Silver proof halves from the 60s (1968-S & 1969-S)

* Pre-1930 Mercs (1928 & 1929-S)

* V nickels (1899, 1906, 1912)

* Barber silver (1908-D quarter, 1906-O half)

* 19th Century coinage (1898 IH cent, 1899 V nickel)

Hang in there, you'll get one. :icon_thumleft:

every time you see a 1970 half in the "wild" a mint set has died. --its the only way they get loose and is the reason they are so hard to find

everytime you see a 1970 half in the "wild' a 1970 mint set has died --since they only came in mint sets , a mint set has to be broken up to get one "loose" into the wild --thats why its a tough find --few people want to break up a mint set.

In 2 1/2 years I have found 2 of them. Not many floating around.

I have two of the 70d's. One I bought in a set that also contained the 1970s small date cent. That set had two highly sought after coins. I think I gave about $65 for the set. The penny is worth almost that much.
