where to look in northwest michigan?

ive always been interested in searching for indian artifacts here in traverse city area,but dont have a clue where to start looking.if anyone can point me in the right direction,it would be much appreciated.

any plowed field or eroded area near a really old or extinct body of water, or in the water itself

thanx,there are alot of those around here.as a matter of fact,there is a place next to some eroded hills and a dried up lake ,and the area is called "the indian mounds by the locals."it is on state land and people ride theyre dirt bikes and quads all over the place.i will have do do some research on that area.
