Had a few hours to burn today so I went to knock on a few doors to gain permission. Turns out the two properties are owned by the same farmer and he had some bad experiences in the past with people sneaking on his property and declined. Of course. Feeling a little dejected since this is my favorite time to detect and I only get a few hours a month to get out I decided to head home early. On the way back, I stopped at one of the many beautiful colonial Virginia churches still standing to take some pictures which is something I've been doing for a few years now.

While I was at the church, a lady asked me if she could help me with something. I just explained to her that I loved the history of the area and was just taking a few pictures. After a few minutes discussing the history of the church and explaining that I was also out looking for a place to metal detect, she invited me to search her property which was close by. I didn't have much time but also didn't want to pass it up so I followed her to a field adjacent to her daughter's house which backed up to a deep water creek.

It took me only a few minutes to find a decent size iron patch which I proceeded to thoroughly and slowly scour. Found two flat buttons right off the bat and then the apothecary's weight.

Cool finds! I am convinced that I was born in the wrong part of the country...but I have dug a peice that looks very much like the one you asked for help identifying. I will be happy if someone recognizes it.

wow good hunt like the pics of church

Nice story Joey. Sometimes things happen when you least expect it. That looks like an early site as that one buckle piece is definitely 1600s. And what is that inscription on the weight? Have you been able to ID that yet? Looks like you have a productive place to go back to and find some nice relics, and maybe even some silver. Wouldn't that be a nice Christmas present? Happy Holidays to you and your family ...... Bill
