Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
I need some info on the White's IDX Pro 950 machine if anyone owns/owned one. I noticed it has a Black Sand setting which tells me it must be ok for saltwater use. I will assume the control box cannot be submerged and that it is a multi-frequency machine. A friend of mine just inherited one, almost brand new, and would like to hunt saltwater beaches with it. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks

Single frequency detector, so, unlikely it will work good in the wet salt sand or water. You'll probably have to adjust it to the point where you lose too much depth to be effective.

I understand the black sand switch is for heavy salt/mineralization areas and should provide adequate stability for wet sand beaches. As for submerging coil in saltwater i.e. Waves and current I think it will get flaky. I believe there is also a pontentimeter adjustment inside the box for better ground balancing for high salt conditions. Google the IDX field tests, Andy sabisch wrote a piece on that unit.
