I was at the CTH and heard about all the neat finds and even got to see many of them but I am having a devil of a time remembering who found what. Thanks everyone for posting your finds, but if they were all in one spot I could comprehend it. DuH! I am slow. Credit is due where credit is earned and I would love to have a name with the various finds. So I'll start it with my measly contribution.

Monty - 1. Old curry comb. 2. Junque 3. rusted wire and more rusted wire. 3. A cache of rusted nails 4. more rusted junque! 5. Nana out in "left field" begging for a sip of warm water I had with me! :D (She had to be the hardest working digger of the bunch).

I do agree Monty...here ya go

Wow! a lot more stuff and "junque" as found that I didn't know about. I found a lot of small chunks of metal and old wire but I tossed it all in the trash can. Just trying to figure out what all that stuff was used for or who might have used it boggles my mind! My mind is boggled very easily! M ::) nty

Hi Monty!

Well. . . I finally got around to cleaning (as best I could) some of my finds from CTH Saturday. After digging barb wire and pieces of small nails all morning (thrown in the trash), I'm afraid that this is about all I have to show. I wish there would have been a prize for the heaviest find :D. . . after removing that Maul Head from the hole I dug, I had to borrow dirt to fill it back up :o.

Take care, I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time!

That is a really old and unusual shotgun shell. It appears to have a primer within a primer. Can you make out any markings on it? Monty

I tried scrubbing as much crud off the top of the shell as I could and was able to reveal the first three letters of "Winchester".
I think it's a 12-gauge. . . I don't see any indentation on the primer from the firing pin so I don't think it was ever fired; If that's the case, I'm surprised that I didn't find any lead shot in the same hole that it was dug ???.

Here are my junk finds ;) ;D, I mean relics.

I notice one cartridge case says something about Newton. Newton built rifles and cartridges from the late 1800s up through the 1930s and was very popular. They probably are most famous for the .257 Newton that was a very good deer cartridge comparable to the .257 Roberts. Newton was way ahead of the times as far as cartridge development and higher velocoty ammo was concerned. When Remington, Winchester, et al caught up with Newton in technology they were able to mass produce rifles and ammo at a lower cost, thus the demise of the Newton line. Newton rifles are more or less collector items now and there are still quite a few of them around. I don't think there is any ammo available for them so shooting them is a handloading proposition. I found mostly nails, wire and fencing staples. The stuff that most folks tossed in the trash. However, since my usual find has been bent rusty nails - finding straight, square ones made it a "find" in my book. Fencing staples however, got the round file. "Bob war" (barbed wire) - found some "war," found some "bobs" - but none attached very well to each other. Probably the round file.

Y'can't make the big finds if you ain't out there, and admittedly, I wasn't in hunt-till-you-drop mode. But I had fun, I caught up with friends, and it was good.

roswellborn, I know what you mean about not being in the hunt to dig til you drop. I just can't do that anymore myself. But I did move a little of the world around and enjoyed visiting with all of you. My finds reflect the amount of energy I put into it! ::) Monty

Those nails and staples always give an indication how old a site is ;) The barb wire can also be dated. So don't view it as a waste of energy, it's history. Doesn't matter what you found...you still found friendship.

Eagle - absolutely right! The friendships were the real treasure that weekend, no matter what else anyone found :)

And Monty, you said it too, moved a little bit of the world around, and enjoyed the visiting.

It was good. :)

I saw several strands of barbed wire that a few of you dug up and some of it was really old style that isn't made any more. Collecting different kinds of barbed wire is big business to some folks.

well i broke my camera ( don't ask bad day ) but ill post my finds when i get a new one
had a great time cant wait till next time
