Not so far from home is an outfit that salvages trees from the city disposal area, mills them, dries them and sells them for next to nothing. The first day I entered their shop was like major kid in a candy store syndrome... Anyway, most of the stuff I buy has interesting grain patterns - quilted, burled, tiger striped, curly, etc. These sort of boards make nice presentation boxes, clocks, accent pieces, trivets, and so on. Here are a few wine boxes I made here recently. The wood species include hard maple, walnut, 1/4 sawed sycamore and cherry. The lids of the boxes are mounted on a 1/4" groove that allows it to slide open and shut. I engineered the handles to be durable enough to be functional vs. being just for show. I thought I would share them with the group before I give them away.

Thanks for looking and have a very merry Christmas!

Very nice work Van.

Fossis.............

Those are gorgeous. I love the more grained woods. Do you line them with anything?

I kept these natural wood on the inside as well. I made sure the interior had grain patterns that said "wow" once the bottle was removed from the interior.
Thanks for the compliments!

Thank you for the encouraging comments. I have an incredible slab of burled maple in the garage that I'm fixing to make a clock out of in the next couple days. I'll post it for you grain lovers. I'll also take a snapshot of a walnut burled clock I did several months ago.
Merry Christmas.

Hey, that is cool.. Since your giving them away...I live in Texas!
Do you put the wine in there as well? ???

Basically ya just insert a bottle of someone's favorite wine and you are good to go - instant gift! You can let them choose the time and place to open it... but there is no better time than the present!

;)
