Only a few weeks in and I can tell this will be a long friggin winter. I guess I'm truely hooked on MDing. I told myself this spring I would bu the Ace 250 just to see if I still with it, then move up to something better... well, I guess I better save up over the winter for something... IYO, whats a good second year detector?

Until next time - Cheers!

In my opinion,
I'd work that Ace if I were you, until I was ready to buy an E-Trac. I don't think going mid-level would be that great of an improvement detector-wise, and if you spent $600-$700 on something in that range, you may find yourself longing for an E-Trac a little later anyway. I think you answered your question that you are in this and you want a new detector. Perhaps other people may suggest a White's V3. I can speak also for Fisher detectors, and I think there is no comparison between E-Trac and F-70/75. If you had to buy something in the F-75 price range, I'd try to find a deal on a Minelab Explorer SE, which is comparable in performance to E Trac (but not quite). Good luck with it.
The other option would be an underwater detector if that interested you, ala Minelab Excaliber II.
The winter blues are bad, I thought about going out today, but the snow is just too deep right now in my opinion. I do have some places I want to hit, but if there is more than 2-3" that takes too much depth away for me. It looks like it wont be clearing for a while, and we may get more this weekend.

of course winter sux --thats why i live in florida

GTL winter is a great time to put together a list of sites you want to hunt.
Your ace 250 will find the good stuff if its there and you want to hunt for it.
Find a few sites you can hunt to death close by and you will be surprised at
what you missed and learned. Try different settings and techniques, who knows
maybe you will be posting a pic like cosmic just did 2010.

Save up and go big!

I'm just a little slow or not inclined to go after the learning curve on the ETrac. But wow, it's the rig for picking those spots everyone else has been through!

I also really respect the way Mark hits the ground with his V3, seems liek an excellent choice as well. Master Senior really wow'ed us with his V3 finds this year also!

Haven't seen enough of the F75 to speak of it, but I do recall at the tearout site that long lean old dude really cleaned up with an F75. Think he got 6 LC's there! A couple of the others there with F75's also got nice finds, a half dime, 3-center, very difficult finds in that noisy dirt even if they were on or near the surface.

Seeing you work that Ace I'm positive you are gonna get the goods if you get the gear. How many of us pulled a 3k diamond ring this year from a noisy playground? And that was one of two gold rings you got one after the other?!?

If you like the idea of going mid-level, I'll be glad to let you try out the F70 anytime we can get out, you'll find it quick and easy to learn. Also check out the new Garret AT Pro, another top-end machine from Garret at a mid level price and like the Ace, it may be best in class for the price range.

There is a lot of snow down here already, cant wait til sping. I just got my BH poineer505 one month ago. Iam a newbie to the metal detecting world. Iam very excited to learn.

seem like dec temps have been below avg now for like

5 yrs in a row.

my tips for a good mid grade unit would be

tesoro cibola, whites xlt, fisher coinstrike .minelab

soverign.

slightly older machines that offer higher performance

than the 250 without breaking the bank.

if u love garrett than the 1350.

I use a tesoro cibola and based on my experiences I would say if possible to try for a better one. It is a good clad machine but it doesn't do so well in areas where the coins are going to be deeper. With mine, the deepest I have really gotten is 5 to 6 inches.

It could very well be that I just wasn't good enough with the machine, but when I started using the minelab safari with my dad I was getting alot more in areas that I had been with the Cibola

Until next time - Cheers! //////////////////// Best all around detector is Minelab Explorel II , can have from EB for 350-500$ , less complicated than ET ( 50% ) , deepper 1-2 inch. super stabil , easy to learn , ------------- for jewels V3 is best so far , and for 4-7 inch deep coins ( price is not right ) , but wil return witch clad after 2 season of hunting . ET is same like Explorel II , but more exp. and more complicated . F-70/75 are optional too and DFX whites ( same level ) //////// Talk with Olderactor He walk around with EX II , and can tel You is slightly better than ET , JUst set FE for -8 , and is ready to go , for chery set for -1, ""express hunting "" ( but You wil miss some good staff )
