I've just gotten back from my conference at Sunset Beach. While I was there I was only able to search the beaches for about 4 hours. And that was during high tide. During that time I discovered that my Surfmaster PI machine WOULD NOT pickup a gold rope chain. I was finding nickels, dimes, quarters, a silver ring and a silver and gold color cross necklace. (Probably costume jewelry.) But when a friend walked by I asked her to let me check her necklace. It was a gold rope and the detector would not pick it up. I called Kellyco and according to them, this is common with all PI machines especially with rope chains. If it has a pendant of some type on it, it usually helps. I was a little disappointed to hear this. (Especially since I was picking up hairpins at 8 inches.) I was wondering if you guys have had the same experience. All together though it was a good week and I had a great time. I look forward to returning.

I'm sorry to say but it is true. Some detectors will pick up chains, but it depends on how big the chain is. I think it has something to do with surface area. Some detectors that operate at a higher frequency can pick up small gold objects such as a gold chain (that's what the pros say).

I have found two gold chains with my Excalibur. They were both of the Figaro type. The detector passed over them and the sound was not a solid sound but erratic. I thought it was going to be a bottle cap. I haven't had a chance to try a rope chain, but my wife has a small chain with links, my machine doesn't even beep when it is directly below it, touching. Each machine is different, you will need to experiment with it.

I hope this doesn't bring you down about your detector.

I'm sure there are others here that can better answer your question.

JP. The next time we hunt let me show you a trick about chains. I might be a hick but i know a little. Cotton

Cotton,

I'm still learning, I learn something new every day.

Most people on the forum will say you can't pick up a chain, just maybe a charm that's on it or maybe the clasp. You were with me when I found that last chain. You know I found it.

But please show me any tricks you have that will help. I can't make it tomorrow....sorry, wife won't let me out to play... :'(

Chains and bracelets are tough. Remember that most of them will be balled up in the sand and not spread out in a straight line. So a pendant or large clasp is not necessary to detect most of em. They do on the other hand ring up real rattly and rarely with a solid perfect tone like a ring. Almost all of the chains I find are like this and I have found my fair share for sure. Think positive and luck in the hunt.

This is the first and only gold chain I have found so far that did not have a pendant on it. It might also have to do with if it is lying straight or balled up??? Who knows. As long as it finds Platinum :laughing7:

Very interesting, I figured chains would hit harder than rings. Just that chains would be lost less frequent than rings.

in 40+ years and over 100 detectors the only detector iv owned that hit on gold chains is the Tiger Shark.i have found some with my Excal's but they hit on the charm not the chain. now silver on the other hand is easy....go figure.LOL

Dixie Digger,

I keep trying to tell people this about the TS. When it comes to gold chains and very small pieces of gold jewelry, The TS is hard to beat. Also a non -closed circle gold earring will also give the Excal. trouble some times.

I have read a few times that the detector only reads one link individually, not the whole chain
as a mass of gold. Therefore, the detector has to be very sensitive to see that small a gold
item. The Tesoro is the only one I have had that can see really small gold, but the sensitivity
is a problem in the salt-water hunting as it picks up mineralization also.Usually need some
bigger links,or clasp,or pendant, though I've heard that when they are balled up it might
help.Don't know if that is true. Good luck and HH Joe

I had a Sandshark ,, Found Gold Chains , Where other detectors would not detect .. guzz1

LDub...Same sorry prob here with my Excal.
In three+ years Ive found 0 gold chains.
In testing on small to medium chains, I either get no signal or non repeating erratic tones.
This seriously bugs me as I know that they are there and if I run the machine hot enough to get any signal on a chain, it overloads with clutter to where Id be chasing ghosts all night.
Going to give my land machine a shot tonight as it does hit on gold chain.Pulled off the box and rigged it to wear around my neck.Should be able to get up to 4ft of water without endangering the unit. Wish me luck....Joe

my whites beach hunter id (9 1/2" black coil) did NOT pick up my gold chain when i tried to test it for gold...got me to wonder if it was real... :icon_scratch: but it did work on gold rings/earrings..
I now have the new 12" super coil (beach hunter 300) but did not test the gold chain on it yet..i`ll probably do that later tonight now you got me thinking about it... ???

Gold chains are real hard to find. I have found a few with my 1280 fisher. None with my excal. They are out there though. I found a few with my eye and a few with a cross on them. Once in Canada,I saw a guy with a snorkle and mask. He had 4 nice gold chains I saw him dive for and come up with. I had none. :tard: Go figure. Mike.
