Hi Guys,

I started working an open field in the centre of my town which is approx 170 years old, I started working it last week
and it produced 2 silver rings, clad and some older coins ( 40's & 50's ) nothing in the range of 100 years or older yet,
any advise for me with finding older items? Most items was dug at 2-5 inches and a few in the 6-7 inch range

The field is littered with bottle caps & pull tabs ( got about 80 of them in the small section which I am working on )
( they were disposed of in a bin 8) )

Below is a google earth image of the field ( marked in red is what I want to work in ) the green marked area is where I have
searched and the finds produced in the area I worked on for about 7-8 hours in total.

Break it down into sections and grid it, dig it all. Once you have gone over the area then grid it the opposite way. After you have gone over it a second time, try using a bigger coil for more depth. Some of my fields don't have much left in them but now produce more keepers than trash. HH and let us know how you do, Mike

Great looking silver rings and coins :icon_thumright:
Sure looks like your field holds some promise. :o

Zero disc & dig it all.

devan,

What detector are you using? If it were me I would divide that field into eight or so sections and SAMPLE each one to find the hottest. Then hammer that section. You never know when you are going to LOSE permission to hunt a site. You want to do the best spot first. Joe

Hi Guys,

thanks for your input :)

@ Joe : I'm using a BH Tracker IV ( first Detector, new hobby and loving it :headbang: ) I already have my eyes on the following MD's

X-Terra 305
Classic 5ID
BH Land Ranger

Still deciding on which one, but for now the BH IV must pay for itself before investing more in my new hobby ::)

regards

D

First - there has to be old stuff there
Second - you have to go over it
Third - your machine has to 'hear' deep enough
Fourth - you need the right conditions - wet is better
Lastly - disc low, Ses. high - clear everything & listen for faint whispers.

devan,

O.K., you don't have a real "deep seeker" there with the Tracker IV, but I can appreciate that you got to use it. Do you understand what I meant about finding the best section? Joe
