I found around 6 or 7 coppers (oldest from 1656, 1723, 1740's, and maybe my 1696 copper) before my first Indian Head Cent, you never know what you will find in the northeast, so much old dirt! Research is key when searching for old places, check old maps and town records, or just try as much public land as you can, especially woods, best case scenario in the center of town, often times behind public schools. I stumbled on the first settlement in town behind a school in the old part of town, and found a few relics there including my first copper. A few months later I found a cellar hole that produced 20 coppers (still haven't found a place this good, though came very close this August) in the public woods behind a school, in an old town. Search everywhere you are allowed to search, and good luck, welcome to the addiction.
