Hello everyone.
I'm a metal detectorist at heart and this is my first post in the bottle forum so as you will realize a total newbie here. I've gone back and read at least 4 months of posts, but still come away with questions. I've done some thorough researching on an old canal town dating from the 1830's to 1880's and have been searching for metal and found cool items including eagle buttons ID'd to the time period of the town. Recently I've gotten down into the actual canal bed for some metal detecting opportunity. Approx 1/4 mile from the location of the ghost town there are just piles and piles of metal and bottles, but appear to date to the late 1940's to 1960's. I am literally stepping on glass step by step. These piles go on and on the length of the canal in the opposite direction of the canal town. Now if I walked the canal bed toward the canal town, the trash and bottles start to disappear. And when I get to the area of the canal where I've identified the actual shipping warehouse found on maps dating 1866, there is little to no evidence of any dumps. There were over 100 home lots in this canal town that lined the edge of the canal. Surely when the canal became unused and people started leaving the town they would have dump stuff here? For the experienced digger where would you start if it was you. I've heard of probe and test holes. I have no probe, and what use would it be with all the tree growth and roots now overcoming the canal bed and canal bank? I did actually have shovel with me and dug maybe about 4-5 holes 8-10 inches deep and got no evidence of anything. How deep would bottles and trash be if they were there. I'm kinda at a loss where to start. Sorry for the ramble and the newbieness.. Lol. Just wanted to paint a picture for those who may have some advice.
