I found this in the middle of an old stone foundation in the middle of the woods this weekend. I looks to be old because there were lots of trees growing up through the middle of it and just the general construction looked old. I have one idea but I don't want to persuade anyone's thinking so, have at it. It is Iron and was about 2" -3" down.

Looking for age and ID

that is what I thought, but then the opening doesn't make much sense. All the smoke would escape.

A lot of people mentioning wheel hub. Maybe they're onto something. A wagon wheel? or more current? I am trying also to figure out an age so that I can figure out how old the foundation is and if it was a house or more of a shed type of thing. The area inside is about 400 square feet. Very small house, but then, old ones were.

After looking at the link provided by Montana Jim, your hub appears to be a Carriage Wheel Hub, rather than a Wagon Wheel Hub. To me, that's even more exciting. Maybe the building you are trying to Id, Captain Jack, is a small carriage house. One thing that I look for in trying to determine if some building is a house or a shed is I look at the windows. Simple, stationary windows are usually found in sheds -- whereas a house will have windows that opened and a thicker sash and sill. If only the foundation remains, then I look for a crawl space. No crawl space or basement? Then probably a barn or a shed. Also, small houses will usually have a threshold, whereas sheds have nothing below the door.

:) I'll take it!

TT, thanks for the suggestions on IDing the foundation! I actually did look for a threshold thinking that I would like to sling the MD around right outside the front door, but I couldn't tell where the door was. You may be right on the carriage house idea.
If it's a carriage house, then there are probably remains of another house close to it then. Back to Blackstone I go!
