This plate was found in cove near the ocean in sand. The plate has obviously been kicking around in the sand/ocean a very long time. The metal is not iron according to my metal detector. Brass, Copper, Zinc, Aluminum or Silver? The metal is generally black with striations almost like wood. Any ideas would be appreciated. Remnants of a latched hatch ???

plate of what?

Thanks for idea of a hatch baspinall, that does seem possible for sure. At first I thought it was a zinc anode, but I think the key is to find out the type of metal. I may have to go to some sort of lab to find out.

Clearly its not a metal but a mixture. Quite a bit of iron with other base metals like copper & ....?

It could be the door of a small safe.... esp. if you can see inner layers and different types of metal sandwiched between the two outside layers..

Yes, it is quite possible that there are different layers. It appears on close examination to be claded with many layers of metal only about 1/32" thick. It is so corroded, difficult to be certain though.

Well it's rusted.........what besides iron rusts?................................hmmmmm....Ok it's Iron!..............

unless it's a relic from the Titanic, it looks to be too far gone to matter much what it is.

Yes, but you can get bands of iron on different metals. Then when it rusts/leaches onto the other metals.
