What a nice find there Seeker41, Looks to be made of tarracotta and most likely a small olive oil jar used as a condiment jar. It looks to have a pour spout on the rim.
As for it sounding off like iron on your metal detector, my Sea Hunter II will sound off on bricks and I believe it is from the iron oxide in the clay. It is possible that this is the case with your little jar.
As for age I am no expert but I would guess around the 18th cent. Again, very nice piece, a real little treasure.
