WW1 Crossed Cannons, A Ring & a Chape from a 1700's Tongue Buckle

Me & HillBilly tried a Couple of Old homesites today that is now just a couple hundred acres of Soybean Field. The Weather was nice and the Sites were very Peaceful, except the beeps from the machines and occasional Geese flying over. That would be enough for me to call it a Successful day, But when hunting with ole HillBilly there is going to be some finds made and it won't take him long to sniff them out. We decided before We got there, that we was going to walk the whole field looking for iron patches and within a few minutes out in the middle of this 200 acre field he is holding up a ring, what's the chances of that :o. So just alittle later he is holding a one piece button that you can't see much detail because of the dirt, but enough was visible to see it had crossed Cannons. I thought for sure that he had a CW ordnance button or maybe even older, but after getting it home and doing alttle cleaning, We think it might be a WW1 Button? It's always amazing of what might be found and makes the mind wander with all the History to be discovered with a Metal Detector. Anyway, The day turned out some very cool finds including some flat buttons, ball button, some sort of hook, the Ring and Crossed Cannons button all credited to HB. I was Fortunate to find a 1700's tongue buckle, a couple leather rivets and a couple unidentified finds. I also have pictured a few flat buttons I found at this site a couple days ago.

I Hope Everyone has the Chance to get out soon and enjoy the Day Swinging,

Re: Crossed Cannons, A Ring & a Tongue Buckle

That is a chape to a Colonial shoe buckle. Nice!

Re: Crossed Cannons, A Ring & a Tongue Buckle

The piece with the cross cannons is a WWI collar disc. It had a threaded stud on the back.

Good to see you and HB still hitting the fields. Looks like you got yourself a good hound dawg there.

That buckle means there might be some deeeep goodies there. Good luck and enjoy this beautiful weather.

Re: Crossed Cannons, A Ring & a Tongue Buckle

I agree that it is a WWI enlisted collar emblem. They are still made with the screw shaft post. The unit trained at Camp Sherman, OH. Many of teh WWI units were assembled from people from within the general area unlike today, a unit is made up from memeber from come form all corners of the US.

Here's a little info I pulled up:

Eighty-third, 83rd Division (Ohio and Pennsylvania) (National Army)
Source No. 2: 83rd Division - Ohio and West Virginia. Trained at Camp Sherman in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Nickname: Thunderbolt Division or Ohio Division
329th, 330th, 331st, 332nd Infantry (Inf.)
322nd, 323rd, 324th Artillery (Art.)
322nd, 323rd, 324th Machine Gun (M. G.)
308th Engineers (Eng.)
Major General Commanding: E. F. Glenn.
Depot Division LeMans and Castres.
Regimental Colors of the 323rd Field Artillery Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division

Thanks Randy, I'm sure that more things await in the soil at this spot, but there may be other spots in this huge field that we haven't even crossed yet. I took off walking and boom started getting signals. Hit the ring first and then I found the hook and button in the same hole.

Very nice artillery collar disk. Your coppers come out so much nicer than mine.
