Recently, Tom Bigbee and I assisted Aviation Historian David Trojan locate artifacts from Payne Field. Payne Field was located just north of West Point, Mississippi and operated from 1918-1920 as a WWI flying training field. Several amazing artifacts were recovered and left with one of the the current property owners for safe keeping. Eventually, all artifacts will be on display at a local museum. Attached are photos of the artifacts and photos showing the items installed on the JN-4 "Jenny" trainer. Some of the items discovered: 1. Collar Device, a very rare enlisted reserve collar disc used on service uniforms between December 1917-1918. 2. A buckle used on a leather strap that held down the engine cover. 3. Cable tension fitting used to tighten the wires that held the JN-4 Jenny together. 4. Tire gauge used to check tire pressure on the aircraft. Several more of the artifacts will require further study to determine exactly what they are.
