I am trying to figure out which detector I should get for my first one. My price range is $350 max. I am considering the Minelab Xterra 30. I was also considering a Garrett Ace 250 (less $$$). Is the Minelab worth the extra $$$? Please consider that I am a NEWBEE and have no experience, yet. Are there others that I should be considering?

My original price range was around $250 max. I am just wondering if for the extra $$$, would I be getting a much better machine that I will not "grow" out of relatively soon?

My plan is to purchase only (1) detector that will last me for a long time.

Sorry for all the questions in regards to "which detector" I should purchase, but I want to make sure that I will be happy with this purchase, not wishing that I "should have" spent the extra $$$ to get a "better" machine that I will not regret getting.

Thanks,

Tom

The XT30 will be a little deeper than the 250.It will also be more valuable when and if you sell or trade later,IMO.

Tough decision. Might be better to but a little more machine that you can grow into instead of one that you may very quickly grow out of. I just started in this hobby myself and considered many different detectors before buying an xterra 50. I, too, wanted to but one detector to last for a long time. I requested info from Minelab and received a very nice color brochure of all their detectors along with a DVD on the three xterra models. The DVD contains explanations and shows employees using them in actually situations.

MWS53,
Hi, i just ordered the X-terra 50 with the extra 18.something khz coil.
How do you like yours?
I started out after Christmas with a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 but wanted something with more horsepower.
And I am looking forward to trying this thing out.

I bought a xterra30 last year and really enjoy it. it is alittle more sensitive than my buddys ace250. I really enjoy it but between the ace 250 and the xterra i think more important is the practice you put in and using the machine and getting used to it. Pm me if you have questions.

I have a Xterra 30, it was my first detector, I purchased it Feb 2006. I also have an Exployer II. I really like both machines. The learning curve has been much greater on the Ex II. It did not take me long to figure out the 30. It is a great machine. I honestly have not used any other brand besides Minelab but they have great service and I have not had any problems with either machine. I have dug up silver coins at 8'' with the 30 (depends on soil conditions) but it is really fun to use. I still use it as much as the Ex II. I will be glad to answer any questions you have.
