Something I don't understand yet is the ground tracking on the X-Terra70.
I have read the manual but nothing goes indepth on it.
I am trying it out as of today and there are more signals, and they seem to be deeper but doesen't seem to be erratic.
I am running the sensitivity between 20 and 25 with auto ground balance.
I'm using mode 2 with the factory stock coil, 4 tones and listening for
the mid to higher tones (or do I need to dig lower ones too), and threshold at 4. For example one
signal may show on the VDI 28- 34 with a consistant 30 to 32. I am new to the X-Terra, is this too erratic or is this good, or should I turn ground tracking off?
I know there is trash, but I know there is some very good stuff too.
The ground is very hard right now and my ames digger is not taking well to it( 10 minutes to dig 6").

Hey Lt,

I too am new to the 70, but maybe I can help.

The way I understand Tracking is a Ground Balance that resets itself every so many seconds.

It compensates for mineralization in ground to give you the ID it can.

If you use it you must remember to turn it off once you have discovered a target, then scan again.Otherwise it will reject the target ( notch it out)

I've noticed signals that jump by more than a value +/- 2 are usually junk.

But there are exceptions especially jewelry, it can jump around. So to be positive you must dig.

But it looks like the way you set yours up, your cherry picking the higher conductivity targets,a nickel and a gold ring have a lot in common as do pull tabs.

Try a lower sens in trash, a single digit threshold,I have read that too high a sensitivity can be compared with driving your car through fog with your high beams on.

Good Luck,

Ron

Hi Lt1stone & fng68

Read this about the X-Terra 70

One thing i have to say is do not over power this unit or you will be loseing DEPTH by running the Sensitivity so high LT1stone from what you posted your going way to high thats why Minelab tested the machine and devised the chart, use the chart to get a comparision to the place you hunting.
Example: If your hunting in a Park and your finding tons of PULLTABS run the Sensitivity @ 9
Track_1000.jpg

#1 Noise Cancel your X-terra 70 useing Auto Mode
#2 Ground Balance your X-terra 70 useing Auto Mode
but do not press the Pin Point Detect Button
now press the Tracking Button then start to walk around and
watch the numbers oh the control panel if they vary from 26 to lets say 32
try to find a number as close as you can to the middle by useing the + or -
button then press the Pin Point Detect button

Also refer to this post it will aide you w/ the x-terra 70

I Hope this helps you.

Dave, that is an interesting chart. I may try that my next time out. However, I have a couple of questions. I have been running my X-70 at the highest sensitivity that produces no falsing (typically between 24 and 28), which is what the owner's manual instructs. So far, I have been hunting local parks, which are quite trashy (tabs, caps and foil), and running in pattern one (which doesn't discriminate tabs, but I don't want to miss the gold). I am getting alot of signals, but if I'm not getting falsing (at least I think I am not), then how would I be losing depth running at the higher sensitivity? Also, if in pattern one, wouldn't I still be getting all the tab and foil signals even if I lowered the sensitivity to 9, as the chart shows? Also, wouldn't I be losing alot of depth if I lower the sensitivity to 9? Maybe I just need to forget about gold (still waiting for that first ring) and discriminate out tabs if I want to work these parks. But, even with greater discrimination, won't I be losing out on deeper coins if I lower the sensitivity to 9? Sorry if I'm rambling. Thanks for any insight you might have.

Hi Casull

If you would watch the 9 part youtube video on the Xlt it will explain
that sometimes lowering the Sens setting will get you more depth than
raiseing it your top of the notch metal detectors are already really sensitive
even when the Sens setting is down @ 9

Watch these Video's that explain alot about all metal detectors

#8 Listen to what Jimmy Sierra, Keith, and Randy Smith says about transmit boost which refers to the Sensitivity

Thanks Dave. It seems that what they are saying is that multiple targets in the ground (trashy areas) will act like heavy mineralization. If I am understanding that correctly, then I can get my head around it. So, if there are enough tabs in the ground it acts like difficult ground and turning down the sensitivity will allow the signal to penetrate better. Am I understanding that correctly?
