I have been metal Detecting for over 30yrs, and my first Metal detector was an old Whites, and then in 1982 I bought what was the top of the line Fisher an X-1260 which I still have.

I have had my X-Terra 70 for about 2 weeks, finally got to go out and use it this past weekend on a Middle School football field. I found 6 Quarters, 12 dimes, 6 pennies (1 was a 1946), and 1 Nickle. So for about 2hrs hunting I thought that was pretty good. The machine I thought was very accurate in Pin-point, and I just used one of the preset patterns and I turned on the 99 tones. Depth seemed to be pretty accurate in that when it said it was over 4 inches down it was. Nickles seemed to be tough as it would ring 10 to 12 when it was trash but a good solid 12 when it was a nickle.

My question to any of you is what ID would I expect to see if its a gold or silver ring?

Cheers,

XTerra-Don

I don't know i did not get mine yet but when i do i will do what i do with all my detectors. That is check the ID Number and the tone it gives off with my wedding band and then my wifes wedding band. That is how i check for ID and tone. ==Jim==

Well I did that, and depending on which way the ring was laying down on the ground the ID's were different. (laying flat vs straight up and down)

Well what i would do is when the ID come up for it flat i would dig that ID. And when the ID come up for it standing on edge i would dig that ID. You would have rings on 2 diffrent ID numbers one standing and one laying. ==Jim==

I've been using the X70 for a month now. My advice is select a pattern, dig EVERYTHING that sounds out. The ID #'s are ok, but never give a truly accurate indication because of countless variables (size, composition, orientation, depth, etc.)
When I use the 70, I only pay attention to the depth reading. Same with the white's DFX. I only look at the depth reading.
I'm sure most of the experts on this forum, never look at the ID either.
The X70 is a great machine, deeper than the DFX and the ability to null out most iron.

The problem with gold and silver rings is that the VDI reading will be affected by the size of the ring and ground mineralization. It can read anywhere from foil up to coins. This holds true with any VLF detector. ..Willy.

Another problem with the xTerra 70 itself, is that it detects TOO DEEP!
It gets tiresome digging 18 inch holes for a mercury dime and 2 foot holes for a silver quarter! Measured the holes to be sure.
Spent an hour today and my arms are ready to fall off. Dug some mercs, 2 silver quarters, a silver ring and a 1928 class ring. No clad.
The dang thing doesn't find clad.
What am I doing wrong?

I don't know what you're swinging, but it sure ain't anything like MY XTerra70. If I can get 10-12" depth (inground) on a quarter, I'm more than happy. I've found plenty of clad too. ..Willy.

That I believe to be true, I have never seen a metal detector find stuff so deep before in the short time I have had it. I have had to stop digging and mark the spot so I can come back, because I was getting tired of digging yet still getting a solid signal...lol

XterraDon i would suggest you make your self a VDI chat
and associate different item to the numbers and the position
they are laying in...Flat= 0 degrees, 45 degrees, Verticle= 90
degrees or standing up right since they would give you a different
tone & most likely a different VDI number.

Midas777gold, I'd be happy to swap your silver for my clad. I really hate to see someone as upset as you just because the clad coins are not coming your way. I'm here to help and feel your pain. >:D
And I know what you mean about depth. If I'm in an area where I don't have to worry about tearing up grass, I use a shovel. Makes the digging go much faster than a hand scooper (at least if the soil is not too packed or rocky).

Good hunting, John K

18 and 24 inches!!!! There are definitely spots I need to go back to, I just assumed it was a big piece of pig iron, or a paint can lid. Anyone else getting this depth? I've been very satisfied so far, but now I'm worried.

I too have gotten tired of digging and still getting a strong signal....the ground here can be like cement! But I will go back after a rain, and check things out again....I have found coins at great depths! This thing will go deep!
