I had (have) the same problem. In my case I had it shipped back to Whites for some other problems as well as the missing lines problem. Whites did fix most of the problems, but the missing line problem came back after a few months.

Yes, I attempted to get into the housing and managed to break the tabs that hold it in place. Found that the screen plugs into the electronics via a very thin ribbon cable. I messed with that and it helped some, but the problem still occurs. If I had it to do over again, I would send it in for repair.

Since in had invested in one repair, I opeted to buy another XLT rather than have the first XLT fixed again. First one was about 12 years old (or older) and I figured it had served it purpose.
