Could be a preform, a work in progress, a discard or a blade by a unexperienced knapper. Still a cool find though. Here's a few pictures of a unfinished piece and a crude blade or a attempt at a point. I usually don't post these but I find them interesting.

The flaking on that preform is interesting, there’s probably not enough passes to be sure but reminds me of the kind of flaking you’d see on a Cody complex piece

If it’s the brown staining you are referring to? That would be where metal at one time years ago hit it. It’s a sign of age
