Went out today for a creek walk. Just got through tick season just in time for the yellow flies to hatch. Must of had 50 of them swarming around me. Idk if I will go back to this creek by my finds today. I’ve found 100s of artifacts in this creek over the years but not so much the past couple. I haven’t found one point in it this year and today wasn’t any different. Found 3 pieces of pottery and one crude scraper. This is my last year out there cause they have sold the property and close in September. Talked to the new future owner today. But hey at least I’ve cleaned it dry.

That is a massive gravel bar; a few years ago I had a creek in Alabama like that; it produced a few points, tools, scrapers and alot of cores. Material was about as even with regular rock.
The picture only shows half of the bar. After some rain to clean some mud off I might go back. Sometimes they are covered by some mud and you can’t see them until the rain clears it up. There used to be a huge gravel bar upstream but it all washed away.

Nice.

Hunting creek gravel can be a challenge for some.

In the late 70s I hunted creeks in Missouri. every heavy rain would change the creek channel exposing new area. I like that.

The creek bed was about 20 feet from bank to bank, and the creek sometimes only about 5 to 7 feet across. Some especially heavy rains would create nice deep pools in the channel for a cool dip in the water.

I feel your pain. For years my coastal spots were exclusive to ME! Then some folk discovered them and finds became few and far between. So.... back to google maps and voila! I now have a new spot that has coughed up dozen or so artifacts in 3 visits. The trick is finding a spot that is, not difficult, but inconvenient, to get to. And... on private property.

Reminds me of my summer doing pipeline surveys around the upper peninsula area, the bugs had me so annoyed I was basically beating myself up slapping at them. I swear the flies were attracted to bugspray. Also why I have a distaste for walking corn fields when it’s hot… anyway it’s definitely harder when you don’t find what you expect, on the flip side a nice point always gives a second wind.

There was a corn crop growing next to the creek. I had bug spray on but they didn’t care. By the time I get back out there I’m hoping they find the deer instead of me.
