just curious say for instance I have this pal (its not bob) who wants to convince his girl friend that spending say £699 - £1000 on a detector just for the beach wet and dry no deeper than say ankle deep.

He also wants to bring home the goodies in order that he can get out of various commitments he currently has and figures if he brings in the gold for her to wear he will be able to get out more often.

He could of course just buy gold and go out detecting but he isn't dishonest plus he will be stuck with elcheapo digging fishing weights.

so please help my friend what detector please and how much gold could he expect per day

many thanks

If he wants to get out of commitments, he should read my post on excuses in the Everything Else forum :laughing9:

Other than that, no matter what machine he is using, he has to be in area not well detected. Your finds will also depend on how clumsy the beach patrons are in leaving their goodies behind. No matter how expensive a MD is, if you are looking in an nonproductive area, the results will speak for themselves.

Man, what is with "us guys"?
My brother all the time is saying "Dont mention to Sandra what I paid for that", even though he is the major breadwinner... Are we really that soft?
I myself feel really guilty sometimes having spent so much to hunt, and then going through slumps.. BUT... I will be damned if I will ever "ask permission" to buy something with my own money... Talking over with a spouse is one thing, asking permission from a girlfriend is nonsense... Tell your buddy to think what he will have to do once that knot is tied... Hmmmmm..

Probably hit major nerves with this post, but I calls it likes I sees it... Best of luck to him, and IMHO, better machines find more stuff... You get what you pay for...

I think it's simple.

Spend little bucks first, find some gold, cash it in buy a better detector, Repeat.

We can't help you with a machine till we know where you are. Generally the more money you pay for a major brand detector the better it will be as a jack of all trades. Water detectors are a special group. Many times you only need one nice piece of jewelry to pay for the detector.

As for having to ask the girl friend what you can spend, You are a gonner. May as well cut'em off and hand them to her cause it is only going to get worse. :help:

Depends on what and where he wants to hunt. If he is going to hunt the beach and is never going to go deeper then couple inches in the water it is hard to beat a Minelab Sovereign GT at the beach, especially after adding a WOT or SEF Butteryfly coil.... You can pick up a good used Sov GT for $400-$600 in good shape, and another $100-$225 for the extra coil, depending of if you buy new or used.....

Hey Bob,
You only go around once and while going around have only so much time to enjoy yourself, you'd spend the money on some other nonsense anyway. Once the thought and desire is in your head it will drive you crazy until you at least try it out. By the way, even the most expensive detectors find fishing weights.

I really don't know what to say here. I have 2 water detectors and I just order a new Excalibur 1000. I didn't have to ask permission i just order it. My wife k now this is what I like to do and she is OK with it. Plus I have 2 land detectors. If the bug bite hard enough I just may get the 3 land detector. Dose she ask his permission before she buys something. Just tell him spend what he can afford.....Matt

thanks for all the great replies told my friend and he said he lives 1/2mile from coastal areas with approx 100 miles of coast line within 20 miles and will only be hunting sand wet and dry plus shallow water.

And that he would buy a detector decided to not tell his girl friend and claim he needs the money for car repairs.

He will get another friend to cover him by writing a reciept for car repairs.

many thanks

now heres something that ive seen over and over again that DOESNT work.i personally know a couple of people who done this.and they have alot of things working against them.now metal detecting luck has alot to do with it.first they are novices.next you bought a machine that isnt up for the task.heres what will happen,1 they will give up due to never finding anything, when they find out their maching really sucks they refuse to pay for what works.does anyone know anyone who found something good with a crappy detector in the water?

Low T is Low testosterone. Loss of "guts", asking for permission before opening the fridge for a beer, or turning the channel. Carrying wife or girl friends purse, spending lots of time in fabric stores and shopping for shoes for the other sex amoung other female activities.

"New Age Man" is loosely translated to "Very Whipped Man"... She must have some really great skills, or he has been mistakenly taking someones Estrogen pills thinking they were Viagra... :laughing7:
