So for those of us unfamiliar, and miles inland.... what exactly does the red tide do to people, fish, vegetation etc...? Where are the worst spots typically, and is it affecting home values anywhere? Is there a long term plan to minimize it? etc.. Just curious

Red tide kills fish, it gives people respiratory problems when you breathe it. I have lived here for 20 years and it comes and goes. The media is more toxic than red tide.

It's a algae bloom.... most commonly happens when the water warms; it sucks the oxygen out of the water and kills the fish. It's common, it sucks, it will pass.... some people are sensitive to it.. it has never bothered me. Probably cause I smoke and am always in a state of bronchial distress..a photo from padre island on the Texas gulf coast.

I went to Boca Grande on Monday and Tuesday, tide wasn't bad due to the wind. Lots of tourists on Monday but a desert on Tuesday.
