Sketches and recollections of Lynchburg by Margaret Anthony cabell. Captain Epps Spain. It's said he left for the west one day and never returned. The date given on page 203 was about 1820.

What was the argument of the Cabell sketch of Lynchburg? Some people in there seem to root where they are starting from historically like the Murrell's. ill take it with a grain of salt. It was a recommended read from the Roanoke library.

Maybe Roanoke doesn't know that Mrs. Cabell never intended it to be an accurate history of ppl & places in L'burg, Va. MY R & I indicate that she ONLY wrote it as a way to remember "stories" to tell ppl... NEVER to PUBLISH it as ACCURATE history; unfortunately, Rev. Christian repeated her "errors" as FACTS. There are SOME facts, such as OLD the Marshall Lodge (FreeMasons, 1793) Building on 9th Street being used for courts, balls (dancing), etc. Lynchburg, Va. was a PRIMITIVE town on the James River, having ONLY streets up to the OLD courthouse. The BP is MORE of the 1885 "era" of DEVELOPED town of Lynchburg, Va. and the WASHINGTON HOUSE/INN of the BP was a BOARDING HOUSE, offering empty ROOMS to Boarders; there were many "DRINKING" INNS in Lynchburg, Va. of the 1817 + era for "entertainment" (eating, drinking, sleeping, etc). Bell Tavern, Nicholas Tavern ("google" it), Western Inn... ALL on the OLD map of Lynchburg, Va. WASHINGTON HOTEL wasn't built until 1823, owned by Robert MORRIS (former MAYOR); he DID "board" ppl in empty rooms in his PRIVATE home in "the story era"... and DID have a 10 year "contract" for "the WASHINGTON", starting with PRIVATE rooms in his home, "growing" to a HOTEL, in 1823. There are SEVERAL more accurate histories of Lynchburg, Va.

MINOR CORRECTIONS, had to review info: it was Joseph Nichols' Tavern, which became the WESTERN HOTEL; been in it... "bar room"/dining room; small reading room with fire-place; four nice size sleeping rooms (2 up-stairs/ 2 down-stairs). "Google" Western Hotel (Lynchburg, Virginia). Map of OLD Lynchburg, Va. indicate that it was at the edge of town (WESTERN entrance), going towards the OLD Turnpike... FAMOUS ppl were wined & dined there; a FEW "over-niters".

:laughing7:.....when you say "most" whom are you including as "most?" This must explain why it's been so difficult for Beale enthusiast to generate any noticeable following, because "most" believe the tale is true......:laughing7: Heck, if you took away the dozen or so people that make up the majority of the threads /post in this forum this not-so super hot "believable" treasure tale would come to a complete standstill..........:laughing7:
