Bufords Tavern

Buford's Tavern

We've come to know it as "Buford's", or "Buford's Tavern" but back in the day what was it called? Seems to me that if it could also accommodate boarders then surely it was known to be more then just a tavern, or just Buford's. So has anyone got an exact line on this?

About all the land in that area over 6,000 acres was owned by Henry Buford. Abraham sold his land eventually to Henry and Paschal Buford, Abraham moved to the Big Bend of the Kentucky River on a military warrant. Thomas Buford was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant and is on a Memorial in front of the Bedford County Courthouse. His land was called the Dowry Tract and included some of the land later bought by Newton Hazelwood and the railroad depot. When the depot was built it was called Buford's Depot and before that it was just called Buford's. These three brothers owned everything from four miles south of the tavern to over six miles north and west to Buford's Gap, east over four miles past the Mt. Zion Church Paschal Buford built in 1822. Later it was changed to Montvale meaning mountain valley.

The Beale PAPERS Pamphlet indicated ONLY "Bufords"; heck, it coulda been Buford's Mill or 2, Buford's Depot (Train Station in Bufordsville/Montvale), Buford's Fancy Farm etc., etc. "PB" died in 1875; in PV's THE BEALE TREASURE: NEW History of a MYSTERY, "Not long after Beale made his second trip to Buford's, Paschal showed evidence of SIGNIFICANT wealth". (Chapt. 24 Finder's Keepers, p. 183.

DYK...? At one time, Bedford City, Va. was known as LIBERTY, Va.? Fancy Farm is @ 4 miles north of Liberty/Bedford City, on the road to Peaks of Otter; WONDERFUL area! Wife & I are gonna go up there, today... gonna be HOT! HOT! HOT!

Jefferson Davis's first wife, was Sarah Knox Taylor, daughter of Gen and US President Zachery Taylor. Zachery Taylor was also a Commandant at Fort King (Ocala, Florida) during the Seminole War.
Fancy Farm and the Hutter's Sandusky were both used by Union Gen David "Black Dave" Hunter as his headquarters during his 1864 Valley Campaign when ordered the burning of VMI.

FF was HQ for Yanks coming down Rt. 43 into Bedford City; getting ready to invade Lynchburg, Va.
