What's the most war nickels, buffs, v's, etc you've found in a box?

Mk all, I love hunting nickels, and I just wanted to hear about all of your best success stories while hunting nickels. So what's your best boxes for v-nickels, buffaloes and war nickels? You can definitely mix and match, like for instance my best and only v-nickel find was with a war nickel in the same box. You can also include 1938 and 1939 Jeffersons in your box find since those are fairly hard to come across and of course any errors as well.

My best boxes have been.

3 War Nickels in one box. :thumbsup:

14 Buffaloes in one box, only one with no date! :headbang:

So come on all, give us a post and lets keep some dreams going!

Sounds great about the 2004's, you finding doubling on the obverse? I've already given into the fact that I'll probably never find 14 Buffaloes in a box again, what's weird is that they were clear wrapped from Brinks, so somehow someone's dump must've put them all in one box, went back and bought other boxes from them but only found like 1 buff per box.

Re: What's the most war nickels, buffs, v's, etc you've found in a box?

I've had a couple threads on the doubled dies. Yeah, it's the fairly major 2004-P "peace medal" doubled die obverse. They were initially discovered in Naples, and I'm just down the road from there. Some of the first few people to find them were roll hunters and cleared out their towns (all in the SW Florida area) of them, but apparently nobody got them all where I'm at.

The weird thing is that I've been looking for this double for a while, but didn't find it until recently, and now I'm finding several. It may be that the first one clued me in to what to look for, so now it's easier for me to spot later-die-state specimens that are not as obvious.

Re: What's the most war nickels, buffs, v's, etc you've found in a box?

I went into my coin bank one day, a couple years ago was told all they could spare was a couple bags of nickels ($100 each). Up to this point I had been getting 2 war nickels a bag average and my record best was 3. I went through the first bag and found 3, so I figured if I found one in the second bag, I would be right on course. I dumped it into my big hard plastic bowl that i sort coins out of and I noticed 2 war nickels right on top in the center of the bowl. Every couple of handfulls after that yielded another. Soon I found a dated Buffalo. I ended up with 20 war nickels and 4 dated buffaloes. 34,35,36,and 37, all from Philly. Since I found them on top of the bowl, they were most likely on the bottom of the bag. That makes me wonder what was on top of the bag that got finished off, before mine got started.

Re: What's the most war nickels, buffs, v's, etc you've found in a box?

Most War Nickels out of a box was technically 96, but the box only had $72 left in it when I bought it. The only reason I got any of them was I spotted 4 war nickel edges in the teller's tray and bough the rest of the box she had been using. I suspect the other 4 came out of the same box, eventhough she insisted a customer had turned them in. This was back in July of 2007.

Most of my other "best of's" are out of bags since I have been primarily been doing bags for the past few years.

Other bests for nickels were:
* 6 buffaloes from one bag ($200)
* 4 V nickels and 4 Buffaloes from one bag ($200)

* 674 pre 1960 Jeffersons from a $100 bag (including 10 war nickels) and 144 with 1 war nickel from another $100 bag purchased at the same time.

Re: What's the most war nickels, buffs, v's, etc you've found in a box?

Hmmm...as always, I marvel at GMan's stats.

Found only one V...a 1905, was so happy that I can't remember what was in the rest of the box (seems like it was a bunch of nickels though).

Another box yielded 3 war nicks and 2 buffs.

Got a really nice 1939D in another box.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck
