Love those coin jars!

A friend let me look thru her coin jar before she turned it in to the casino for cash. From $76.73 (a year's worth) I found a few goodies -

Wheaties: 1952-D, 1954-D

Canadian: 1957, 1963

One of the reasons this is fun is that we get a glimpse of what's actually out there in circulation (she's not a coin collector). Can we estimate that in normal pocket change one can expect about two wheaties in a year?

That's how I'm going to break into the CRH hobby; have change here and there to be explored, plus at Christmas we dug out the old Tripoly game, which we hadn't played since the late 70's. And in it are about 30 rolls of pennies; while playing noticed most were dated in the 60's & 70's, so the chance of some Wheats are pretty good

Been following the posts here for some time now; looking forward to getting started. But I'm not planning to become addicted, just like I'm not addicted to metal detecting :P

Well, lets do the math.

Assume you make one cash purchase per day that requires change. With each purchase you will get back 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 pennies. So an average of 2 pennies per day.

2 pennies/day * 365 days/year = 730.

I average 12 wheats/2500 pennies so using that:

out of 730 pennies I would expect (12/2500) * 730 = 3.5 wheat pennies per year.

So 2 is not too far off if the assumption on cash purchases per day is correct. Or adjust accordingly if it is.

Interesting numbers. But it's inevitable that the average will go down in the future for a number of reasons, but mostly because of fewer cash transactions nowadays.
