Best score of my life from a bank- not sure I even believe it!

Went to the local credit union today at lunch. They kind of got tired of seeing me last winter, I guess I was a bother getting halves. I don't search coins much, just too busy. But today, I had an itch to look thru some coins. The teller didn't have any halves, I asked if they had any in the back (as in a box) or a box of dimes. He went back and came back in a few minutes. Said no halves but they had $300 in dimes. They had to be "verified", which means customers brought them in and they had to open the rolls and COUNT THEM. Also they had a few, maybe 10 of the "big dollars". I thought I didn't want to stay here all day, so I told them I'd take $100 In dimes and the big dollars. I thought great, more ugly Eisenhower dollars, as I don't think they're especially attractive. It took over 20 minutes. I got the coins, only had a few minutes to get back to work before I was officially late back from lunch. Paid them and glanced at the big dollars, I off handedly remarked, boy they're dirty. Got to the car and....and....and...

Six Eisenhowers. Only 5 are pictured, the other fell on the floor, will retrieve it shortly. And these...... They have black spots but the detail especially on the Morgans is unbelievable. All the hair is there, the ear is distinct, LIBERTY is crisp.

Are you sure the one (I believe the top right Peace Dollar) is a 1923? I zoomed in and it loos like a 1928! I know that some 1923's are mistaken for 1928's but it appears to have closed loops not close loops.

Again ill say dont tip off the tellers too much as to how good a deal it was- might never see ag again- if they know then ok but sounds like this one had no idea about the peaces and Morgan's
I wouldnt do any different than I have always done in the past as far as treating the tellers

If so, you are in the money!!!! 28 P is worth more than twice the 21.

Digital microscope won't cooperate. However, it is definitely a 1928 with no mint mark. Here's a better (large) pic of the obverse. When I figure out how to get the microscope working again, I'll get some very close ups of the key areas.

Do you have a pic of the reverse? That's where the mint mark would be if it has one. It is near the tail feathers.

Yeah I can't tell anything, the pic is too blurry. I'm following your thread though, I'm really interested in this, I hope you have a winner here! (You already are a winner because you got silver dollars at face lol).

It is definitely a 1928 Philly. Why would someone take 90year old silver dollars to a bank? Estate finds by younger people? Theft from grandmom ? Rich folks who don't care?

My cat had fun with these this am. Around 5 I heard clink crash . Coin hitting floor, this repeated itself every 5 minutes for an hour till he finally got me out of bed.

Contrary to previous advice given, DO NOT have a "professional" "dip" the coin. The tarnish is fine and if you sent it to be slabbed after dipping it would come back cleaned.

It depends... I know of several coins that have been dipped, and are happily living in slabs (PCGS and NGC) with no details grade or mention of improper cleaning. The key is to know what you're doing, that's why I'd only have someone who knows what they are doing attempt it. They are also fine left as is with the tarnish in place, but it's not a very attractive toning... Not trying to start a big fight over cleaning coins, but IF DONE PROPERLY, it can enhance a coin's appearance and value. I agree with you that if botched, it can do the opposite. The grading services slab dipped/cleaned coins everyday so long as they don't show evidence of "improper cleaning".

Sounds like a great score, smokey. It's funny that you said this was the best score of your life and it turned out even better than you realized.
