135 boxes of nickels and I finally found my first one: a 1943D silver nickel. Rewards are there but CRHing sure can be a harsh mistress. IMG_3373.JPG IMG_3372.JPG

135 boxes and only one war nick! You would have better odds with quarter boxes!

Sometimes the War Nicks can be a bit slow. Do you also keep errors and varieties? A recent find among Nicks was a 1941S, Large Mint Mark. Sold a few weeks ago for $10. Sadly, it was not a repunched mint mark.

the 43-D is the super low mintage one you want to find. over 430 boxes searched and I only found 2. the others are easy---over 450 sitting in sorted jars.

That's always the tough war nick. Now get your 50-d & 39-d.

Wow, that's a lot of nickels to go through for one war nick. I average about 1 per box in my area. Very rarely get skunked, but also get the occasional box with multiples.

I think you're all missing what he's saying: 1st 43-d not 1st war nick. No one would go through 135 boxes w/out finding anything

I've found two 1950d and two 1939d. Ironically I found all 4 within the same week of hunting. I happened to be passing through Phoenix and picked up 5 boxes at two different banks. All four were found in these boxes. I think I just happened to get some boxes where some kid had turned in his Dad's coin collection. Who knows. But it's 70 boxes later and no others have turned up. They are extremely rare for me.

I only have 122 war nickels, but 4 of them are 1943D. Guess it depends on where you are some. I only have 2 of the 1944D and 3 of the 1945D, my lowest war nickel tallies.

I see the all the time at work. So much that I gave up even caring about silver war nickel, I just let them slide. I do take another look when I see a buffalo, double checking to see if there is a peg leg. Lol if there is I'll leave a note in the box and how to contact me to exchange the box for 125$.

The only error I look for is the 1975D. I'll also keep a Proof if it's still in really nice condition. Otherwise, they all go back into the fray.
