I wanted a slight change of scenery and decided to work towards my goal of 1800 50+ year old nickels this year. I ordered 3 boxes of nickels ($300) and picked up $20 elsewhere. My first box was decent, yielding a 1927 Buffalo nickel (which I had never found in circulation before) and a 1943P war nickel, as well as a foreign coin that I can't identify. Anybody know what it is? My guess is Thailand but not quite sure.

Second box was decent, nothing older than 1938, no foreign, no war nickels. Best one here was a 1955.

The third box gave me a VERY nice treat, one that I'd been looking for for over a decade! I FINALLY got a 1938S Jefferson, this is the second to last nickel I need to complete my Jefferson nickel set since I started it back in high school in like 1996. All that is left is a 39D now. That box also had a 1943P and a 1945D, as well as a couple canadians that I kept (72 and 74).

The $20 loose was 8 rolls of handrolled and 2 machine rolled. Each of the 8 handrolled had 41 nickels in them, so I made $.40 there. Cool.

Total for the day was:

1927 Buff
1938 (2)
1938S
1939 (4)
1940 (7)
40D (2)
40S
41(5)
41S(2)

43P(2)

49D
51D(2)

53D

54D(6)
55
55D(3)
56(3)
56D(5)
57D(7

Also pictured is my collection of circulation-only Buffalo nickels. I'm up to 18 different nickels, now, with this 1927.

Nice finds Doc.

Special kudos on finding your next to last Jeff. Good luck finding the "elusive" 39d.

Thanks, I plan on picking up my pace because my goal is 1800 50+ year old nickels, 10 Buffaloes, and 1 V nickel by the end of 2007. Maybe I'll be lucky and stumble upon a 39D. One of the main problems is that I'm out in PA where I just don't see a lot of the older D and S mint coins. (I have 58 silver dimes this year, and none have been an S mint, for example). I'll just keep plugging away.

My opinion is its just a matter of persistence.

I have found 3 of the 1939-D this year. The only two I have yet to find in 2007 are 1938-S and 1950-D.

That is one nice thing about the midwest, I get a decent mix of mintmarks.

Finishing another Jefferson nickel set is one of 3 goals I may not reach in 2007.
The other two are
* 10 IH pennies (haven't found one in ages)
* complete the silver roosevelt collection. I have 18 left to finish it in 2007, but unfortunately I still need about 6 to 10 of those overall as well.
(I consider my V nickel as finding a Barber).

Are you looking to sell the 1,800 nickels? I've been keeping my pre1960 nickels, but was wondering if they were really worth anything on E-Bay, etc.

Congratulations on getting one closer to finishing your album! That must have felt good!

I sell them by the roll on Ebay already. They fetch a small premium, usually around 10 to 25 cents profit for each coin after all the fees. It's an easy way to get rid of all my nickels, plus you get something for them over face value.

my first $20 in nickels had a 1939D nickel in it. good luck on finding it! why don't you keep the 1958 and 1959 nickels? people still buy these on ebay too. dealers give face value for them, but i see them going for 10 cents each anywhere else. keep a watch out for those rpms'. good luck on your goals. 8)

Everyone has their own cutoffs for 'keepers' and I just have a 50 year cutoff. Last year I didn't save 1957 or 1957D nickels. Next year I'll save '58 and '58D. I figure I'll do this until around 2014 when 1964s are 50 years old and are still every 10th nickel ;D

Nice looking Buffalo collection there Doc. I see you've used date restorer on some of them. That's half the fun of finding dateless buffalos, wondering what year will appear. I found most turn out to be roughly 1913-1924. I even used Nic-A-Date on a copper-nickel foreign coin and it worked. Love that stuff!

Good luck on the 39-D. In 20+ years of casino hunting I've found a total of 3, so it's not impossible.
