Re: Found a dime missing its clad

I found a dime back in the '70s that was missing about two-thirds of the silver clad on both the obverse and reverse.

Traded it in on a Garrett BFO metal detector ~ best deal I'd ever made.

Still stand by it. Found a lot of silver with that ole BFO, even a lil' gold.

Just looks like post-mint damage to me. Can't really tell from that scan though.

If it was worn down to the copper then why could you see the hair marks?

Looks to me to have the same discoloration of a coin that was in the ground and cleaned. Really do not think it is missing the clad layer.

Look at the letters in the word Liberty, they look like the clad is there and the
coloration has been worn away.

It doesn't appear to be worn. How wide is the rim? It looks like it either had a while in a harsh environment (like in the ground or by some chemicals or something) and then circulated for a little while, leaving the outer layer copper-colored but not significantly worn. The high parts on LIBERTY are starting to return to the grayish/silver color since they are the parts of the face of the coin that get worn more.
