I went to a local auction for the first time a seen a bunch of old coins bought most of them and I'm just curious on how did I do and what to kind of look for next time I go.

12 Steel Pennies for $12.50
6 Indian head Pennies for $20.00
1 Shield Nickel for $7.00
8 Buffalo Nickels for $13.00
4 Mercury Dimes for $9.00
4 Barber Dimes for $15.00

Tried my best with the camera little reflection issues

Well, you didn't get any bargains, pretty high actually. Oh well you have a start to a nice collection. Auctions often are not the best place to get a deal, unless you can recognize a rarity that everyone else misses.

If you was willing to pay the price that you did,It must have been good enough for you.
That is all that matters.Coins is worth what someone will pay for them.

I agree with Fortball, If you are happy with them, then you did just fine. That's the great thing about coins. The nice part about the entire thing, they aren't making any more of what you bought, ever.

I think you did good.

I would say your best buy was the shield nickle, I just sold one that I dug (1876) on ebay and it brought a little over $20. Other then that you may have paid a bit much for them but they are yours now and thats what matters.

I think they was a little high. But the coins is wourth what ever you are willing to pay for them. Now if you have extra cash on your self you could go to town where they buy and sell gold and silver. See what they are paying for the silver and older coins.
then sit in your car and when someone pull up to sell their coins you offer them a little more then what they are paying for them. You can get some decents coins that way.....Matt

Agreed, you did pay a little over the top. I know when I go to coin shows, dealers are always willing to bargain. Maybe you should have held out a bit more. :icon_scratch:

After almost a week sitting on it I do think I over paid a bit but I got excitied about the coins because I don't have any of them in my collection. I think I'll be a little bit more cautious next time I see any coins at the auction. Get the info on them then come home and look them up.
Thanks for comments everyone.

You payed high end retail pricing. My coin shop that I periodically visit is huge! (An old bank!) They sell to me like average whole sale price. Even cheaper than grey sheet sometimes. They just can't believe seeing a teenager in their shop! I love it! But really it's not about money, it's about the fun. And you must have had a fun time at that auction. (I've been meaning to find some auctions in my area to go to, just for kicks!)

I get the same looks. When I go to coin shows with my dad, the vendors always assume he's the one buying when I really am. I am almost 20!

Picked up 2 coins at the auction last thursday and I held off on a bunch of stuff that went way too high, but here are the 2 I got.

1867 Shield Nickle for $2.50
Vermont 24k gold plated quarter for $3.00 (no one was bidding on it so I was like it is only 3 bucks)
