I'm no expert but I believe it to be a mint error. Probably caused by a couple of small cuds. FWIW.

It's a die chip inside the "N" Really has no value other than a cent IMHO

I'm no "expert" either, but I concurr with usandthem. I have several pounds of pre-1983 pennies. Among them I found 163 - 1976 pennies. The only mint missing (for some reason) is San Francisco. I could find none with this anomaly.
My best advice?: Ask a professional.

The only 1976-S cents were proofs.
1/100 of an American dollar is a cent. It is NOT a penny. The word penny is used by several other countries, such as Great Britain, to denote their smallest denomination. In order to be numismatically correct, you must use the term cent to describe the American coin.

Thanks! After I posted, I got curious and looked it up. I guess that's a good reason for not having one.
As I said, I'm no expert, hell, I'm not even sure I know enough to be a novice. I just check my change, then drop wheaties in one jar, copper memorials in another, and zincolns in another to be "recycled".
The closest I come to being a "collector" is, I weigh my 1982 pennies to make sure I don't recycle copper ones.

The last circulation penny made in "San Fran" was the 1974-S.
