1870 $10 Gold Eagle

Hi,

I am looking at an 1870 $10 gold eagle for sale (Philly mint) and have not been able to find recent sale comps to value it. I would grade it at VF. Any help with value / a good purchase price would be appreciated.

NGC has the coin in VF condition at $1450. With most recent sales at: $977.50 (3/21/10), $1092.50 (7/30/08) and usacoinbook has it at $1,063 in VF condition.

I'm not sure what would be the best price, but there's just a few numbers for ya.

It you could get it for around $900, that's fairly good. Red Book gives a value of about $950 in VF condition.

Thanks. I have always found the red book values to be inflated (or at least a high retail value); strange that the red book comes in below the sales, although those sales go back a number of years.
