Bought a Henning nickel last week as part of a misc coin lot. I got the '44 Henning, a 1950-D Jeff listed as MS-60 in a littleton sleeve, a very nice 1909 vdb cent, an unc. 1929 wheatie, plus a SLQ, 3 mercs, and 2 XF'ish 1938 Jeff's for a whopping total of $17. I was prepared to pay quite a bit more so I was stoked it went so cheap. Couple of questions - the 1950-D in the Littleton sleeve, I assume I just cut it out and put it into a normal 2x2? I assume the Henning is an authentic Henning - any thoughts on that? I've never held one before so I'm really just guessing. I also got a great XF-AU 1916-S Mercury w/ FSB for $3, a 1883 w/c V nickel in VF-30 for $5 and a 1948 P Franklin for $9. Overall I think I had a great week. Any thoughts on values for the coins pictured are appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

The Henning looks real to me. I have a pic of both versions If I can find, I'll post here so you can see and compare. Cool find! The Dot and texture are a quick give away.

My pics aren't the greatest, but if you blow them up, you will see the one has the dot in the R and the other is also a Henning(I think), Just a different type of reverse.

Thanks Nitric, I think this is the looped R variety. I also just weighed it and it came in a 5.32g which I think is right.

I'm sure you already found the history and rumors of where they think he dumped a bunch of them, on the net. :laughing7:

Yes, I know a bit about the history and of course it's a very interesting story. I always thought it would be neat to own but I'm pretty value oriented when it comes to buying coins. When I saw this grouping of coins, the dang thing is labeled "Counterfeit war nickel" but I didn't get the impression that anyone in the room knew what it was. Basically I think I paid right at fair market value for the other coins in the lot and the Henning was basically free!

I'd cut out the 50-d nick. I don't want anything associated with Littleton- biggest ripoff company in the business. Period. Lol

I've never owned a littleton coin before. I assumed that was the right course of action but wanted to make sure. Thanks.

I always hated those packages, they just don't stack well, it's hard to keep them in pages. They slide all over...etc...:laughing7:

And if your just getting into coins! Wait until you get a hold of some of the old rolls in the plastic tubes! The tubes shrink locking the coins in and they are a real pain to get out! Especially if they are unc. and your trying not to damage any of the coins!:laughing7:

love the Henning---gotta find one of those puppies:--))
I started to go through my buckets of old nickels looking for one from CRH and quickly gave up. Moving forward I'll keep my eyes open. Would awesome to pull one from circulation.
