I bought a roll of Buffs and V nickels from my dealer for 65 cents each as I was going through them I found this V nickel, I think it is a filled die but could it be tooled? The other side of the coin doesn't show any damage or repair

The depression where the number was indicates to me it was removed for unknown reasons.

Someone may have been making a 1913.

Yes, I think it is the start of a 1913 nickel. They were going to transfer another digit a 3 over it?

It sure looks intentionally removed in my opinion. Perhaps someone's attempt to make a 1913 rarity? They may have intended to solder on a "3" from a 1903, kinda like they do to the "D" mint mark on 1916 dimes.

Whoever "they" were, they have some skill. Put to ill gain, but still. That's microscopic work.

I bought a usb microscope from Amazon, "plugable USB 2.0 Microscope" it was only $35 so decided to take a chance. Installation was super easy for windows, works on Mac also. focusing was really a snap and the utilities are very good.

I was able to bring up the tool marks on the 191* V nickel without any problem
