The Name of Your Boat

I'm in the process of looking for a new-to-me-boat, but, from past experience, I am leaning strongly toward naming it "The Money Pit". Since it is hard to find one boat that meets all needs, perhaps a fleet of 3 vessels...No Money...Mo' Money and (for the one the investors get to pay for)...Yo' Money.

"GOLD HAWG" because I once wanted to buy a fishing boat called "Blind Hawg" - learned from the Carolina Captain that she was named that because "even a blind hawg can find an acorn once in awhile"

so I figured that a GOLD hawg just might find some gold....

and you have to say hawg with a Southern drawl!

on my birthday/christmas wish list. this would make a fine liveaboard/treasure hunting vessel. I like british vessels and it all started with the vosper/pt boats. I think I'll call it "tim buck II"

I had originally planned to name my motorsailor mickey finn. I worked at a place that had 2 tims, the other guy was senior so they called me mickey to differentiate. I always liked huckleberry finn so I thought mickey finn was a good name but some folks thought it was about the date rape drug so I canned it. oh well it was their minds in the gutter not mine.

Well, here's a horse...ah I mean boat of a different color. I cruised Subic Bay and beyond with my first boat, Sirena Hunter. The name came to me after I painted her,(graphics done by locals) rebuilt her 18 HP Briggs and Stratton engine and was told I needed a name for good luck. Since the Filipino's truly believe in mermaids and since I am an adventurous type, I declared " If there is a mermaid out there, I will find her, I Christen my banca "Sirena Hunter'" At 9 meters long, she chugged around the bay proudly with a max payload of 10 Filipina's, 5 cases of San Miguel and a yellow fin with pansit on the side cruising to Grande Island. I never did find Sirena, but had a great time trying.

My second boat was a two meter mini banca racer with the engine from Sirena Hunter transferred over. Her name was 'FedEx Express' and was painted like a FedEx Plane. (I am an Avionics Specialist for FedEx). I was clocked at 40mph...a true suicide machine.

After returning from the PI, I bought my third boat. A 16 foot Jet boat. A SeaRay F16XR. 175hp Named Sirena Hunter II.

I'm thinking of using the Jet boat in my coastal treasure hunting as a people mover to and from a moored working vessel if she'll behave in the shallow waters.

Sungana Beach
My boat's name was given to me by a group of old Italian immigrants. I was flying into the narrow NO WAKE zone with my boat up on plane. Over on the shoreline and adjoining docks was this group of vacationing Italian immigrants. They were having a good time fishing and wading in the water with their pants rolled up. Just as I was approaching them, I dropped my beer and it rolled to the back of the boat. So naturally, I got up, walked to the back of the boat and bent down to retrieve it. As I was bending down, I could hear some yelling and commotion coming from shore. There were some clinking and pinging sounds, followed by the sound of drag washers whirring at a furious rate. Then there were some splashing sounds like waves slamming against a dock, and again, I swear I heard some loud voices. As I stood up and made my way back to the driver's seat, I saw all the immigrants along the shore pointing at me with just one finger (it must be an Italian custom) and they were all soaking wet (from swimming or something). Right about then I ran over a NO WAKE ZONE buoy (why they put them right in the channel I'll never know). So I figure I'll be a nice guy and I throttled down the engine. It was about then I heard a bunch of the guys yelling, "Hey, you Sungana Beach!", and they were pointing at me in that weird one fingered way again. So I smiled and waved back to them saying, "Who, me?". "Yeah, you're a Sungana Beach" they told me. So I figured, Who am I to argue with them?

Freshwater lake = 20' pontoon w/50hp Merc outboard named the "Seaweed" Why? Because for years, when I took my wife fishing, she'd always come up with seaweed, thinking she had a fish on. She said about a thousand times "If we ever get a boat, we should name it Seaweed!"
