Look on the bright side, you'll probably find so many you won't want to keep them all anyway! Looking forward to hear about the trip. Doug.

    Thanks Doug!

Well, here's an update , after our gold trip to Paradise Valley, we're going to continue up the Dalton Hwy (Ice Road Truckers Rd) and do a 4-day Caribou hunt with our bows! I qualified for the IBEP (international bow hunters education program) so I'm legal to shoot a big bull (or if I get desparate, a smaller cow). I can hardly wait! I'll be sure to post pics of our gold (if we're lucky) and a caribou (postiive thinking isnt' a bad thing)

Got my mouth watering for some caribou jerky!! Good luck out there!!

Hope you dont have to haul your kill too far, at least in northern AK they are a bit smaller. Quite curios animals, so you should be able to get a close.

Don't know about that curious thing, when I was stationed 200 mi. north of artic circle my NCOIC and I went hunting.
He carring a sporterized 30-A3 and me a Win. 338, we came upon a herd and they were in no way curious about 2 guys in fat suits carrying canons. We stalked them out a finger and by the time we got to the end of the finger they were gone just like ghosts.

If we get lucky enough to find a nugget...maybe a dumb caribou will stumple our direction while feeding...don't care if it's a bull or cow, meat in the freezer is my priority ;-). Jay and his son Logan went up on Monday, came back on Thus...put a good hard stalk (Logan's "sniper stalk") on two trophy bulls but couldn't get closer than 70 yards...they were bow hunting so they didn't have to walk in 5 miles off the road (required for rifle hunting). Smart animals! Big heards were scarce but still a very memorable hunt! Can't wait to experience it myself!

Gramps, you were stationed 200 miles north of the arctic circle...wow! I don't think the AF or Army is up there anymore but I once had the chance to reenlist at the arctic cirle (fly in) but the weather was a typical foggy day so no go, bummer.

Angie here's a little wiki blurb about where I was stationed:

Cape Lisburne Air Force Station (AAC ID: F-07, LRR ID: A-19, DEW ID: LIZ-1) is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located 276.5 miles (445.0 km) west-southwest of Point Barrow, Alaska.

The radar surveillance station was closed on 1 November 1983, and was re-designated as a Long Range Radar (LRR) site as part of the Alaska Radar System. Today, it remains active as part of the Alaska NORAD Region under the jurisdiction of the 611th Air Support Group, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.

The site designation when I was there Dec "65" > Nov. "66" was the 711th AC&W Sqdn.. The site was a split site with the radar and maint. troops up on the mountain (top Camp) and operations and support at bottom camp. Spent about 11 months up there, First assignmnt out of tech school.

    Hey Gramps...
So what your saying is that they were giving you the finger?

I reckon you could say that, we had that finger all to ourselves.

Hey Angie, how did your bow hunting/prospecting trip go in August?
Having lived in Alaska for 20 years, and missing her....just curious!

    Hi There,

Well, the gold trip to Paradise valley was the best trip I've taken here in Alaska! We found some real nice nuggets (almost 1/2 oz worth)...if you pm me or send me an email, I'll send a picture...can't figure out how to do it here.

No Caribou though, we were so tired and worn out after 8 days of gold hunting with our detectors that I had no energy for a caribou hunt ;-(.

Really, that's neat! What a beautiful place huh? We're going back next summer to help him out and to re-mark some of his claims way up the creek. He's really done good there, heard some amazing stories as you probably recall. Mic is doing great and looks good but I'm sure he's slowed down some since 2000. He ran the dozer and backhoe for us and opened up some gold opportunities. We worked so hard and it took me a week to recover, I'm sure every muscle/joint hurt, especially my knees but we had a great time! How much gold did you find when you were there? I'll attach some pics.
