Home Remedies - Post yours too!
Again, don't let the title fool you. This is about making up your own home remedies that may, or may not work. I actually got the idea from a post regarding poison ivy..
So, without further ado... My remedy for poison ivy
Spring and summer are the seasons you really have to worry about running into that little plant... Yeah, you've all heard leaves of 3, let it be... Still 100's seems to find that shinny little plant, or does it somehow find you
Just don't let it rub you the wrong way So if you have it, here's my cure.
Forget rubbing those lotions and various dried roots and weeds, they do absolutely little to stop the itchiness. My cure also has another potentially benefit, and it's easy to do right at home.
1- get into a bathing suit, or shorts
2- Then get a good 1/2 cup of oil... I prefer Wesson Oil, but any brand will do
3- Proceed to cover your whole body in oil; not just the infected part
4- Sit in the sun for a good 1-3 hours
5- Go home and shower off any excess oil that did not wash away from your perspiration.
6- Most people will have a severe burn that will make you forget about the itchiness
For the really bold: Lay in a makeshift bed of aluminum foil to maximize your results
The benefit
Once the burn heals, you will be left with a golden tan and be the envy of everyone

Actually, Spartucus, I have a better remedy for poison Ivy than you do... I hope you don't mind... BUT...;
The 'itch' in poison ivy can be immediately curbed if you get hot water to pour over the infected spot. Hot enough not to burn you, but just enough so you can stand it (the hotter the better). Run it over your spot until it no longer has that "orgasmic" feeling (you'll know what I mean if you ever use this technique). Afterwords, dry it off. Tomorrow, you will do it again. You will use this hot water technique for 3 days.
.... This is the cycle of poison ivy (I feel like I'm a specialist in this field just because of [personal] issues that I'll probably get into later, but trust me... I know...). The cycle is this...;
There are 9 days total to the infection. It's separated by 3 separate cycles of 3 days each. The first 3 days is when you start to learn where the infections are located. The next 3 days are those infection spots that do nothing but get worse and worse, and itch more and more... the last 3 days is the healing process... the scabs start to go away and the itches starts to reside.
When I was about 12 years old, I found a patch of poison ivy in my back yard, and thought it would be 'cool' if I extracted the juices from the plant, and placed it into a container. I took the plant and hand squeezed an entire 35mm film canister full of the oil. A few days later, I was in the emergency room. The entire front of my body was boiling with ooze. It was everywhere. Since that day, I've had other experiences, but I've been able to learn from my mistakes,..... such as... camping in the woods and using the wrong leaf after you use the bathroom. Yep, another hard lesson learned.
But, Never mind that craziness. Currently, I am a big fan of Garlic for athletes foot. I used to have horrible foot fungus, and the doc's would prescribe $50 medication (with insurance). I'd put it on everyday for 2 weeks straight before it ever started to take effect... but, you get you some garlic oil Put it on your foot one time and it's immediately gone. Period. The prescription was called "Econozole". But, simply garlic oil, rubbed into the ailment, cured my foot problem much better. In fact, if anyone has a foot fungus problem, and they asked me for instructions, I'll be happy to oblige....

mikeofaustin, that sounds like it work work just fine but you won't get a tan too
I knew of the trick for garlic too... We used to put a clove between our toes and soak it in very warm tomato sauce. Tomatoes were known for getting skunk stink off, but the fruit when warmed also has additional healing powers. By the evening you no longer felt the itching of the feet as we'd sit down for a spaghetti dinner, and we also noticed that we didn't have to add Romano, or Parmesan cheese to the meal

Re: Home Remedies - Post yours too!
My dad used to use sandpaper to try and ail his ivy itch. He got temporary relief from the itch, In the end it would look like road rash.
This does give temporary relief! If you have tough calus like skin use a very course grit! If you have tender baby like skin, use a finer grit!

Contrary to popular belief, rubbing your belly while patting your head will not cure a migrane or a stomach ache.
....or is it patting your belly and rubbing your head?

The best remedy I have heard of was for coughing. It seems that any type of strong laxative will stop you from coughing faster than any prescription medicine. rockhound

Word to the wise.. Just because you have hammer toe, that doesn't mean you can drive nails with your feet.
