Down here we enjoy picking Medeco locks.

(rakes are for sissys)

View attachment 978337

Must have happened after I retired, when I was active in the business, medeco had a bounty offered to anybody that could pick one of their cylinders, though its been awhile so I wouldn't be surprised.
Picks are preference only, I always preferred a small diamond, though I did not do to much of that, we did mostly safe/vault work. Ever seen a mini lance in action ?

Dunno what locksmiths in your neck of the woods eat, but us over here eat S&Gs 951c padlocks for breakfast, are those abloy locks in that pic ? or old school Americans.

Mike
A couple that I rekeyed....

The first one is a "Master" brand.
IMG_1304.JPG
IMG_1320.JPG
IMG_1305.JPG

In the middle photo, you notice a "roll pin" lower right.
I drilled it out and the core assembly came out.
Then it was just a matter of pinning it up to an Ilco M4 pre-cut key I already had.
I then put the core assembly back in the lock body,
replaced the "roll pin"
and duped up the key.
IMG_1306.JPG

Or perhaps "IC Cores" are of interest to you....

Here's a "Best,"
6 pin, with a B2 A keyway.
IMG_1307.JPG
IMG_1308.JPG

I "drilled out" the core (Picking is pretty much impossible),
removed all the parts of the old core,
IMG_1310.JPG
keyed up a new core with a specialty pinning kit for only IC cores,
IMG_1313.JPG
and installed the new core.
Now, with IC cores,
Folks,
you have to have at least 2 keys-
one that actually works the lock, and one used only to remove the core...
IMG_1311.JPG
ic core 6.png
If you notice towards the back of the core is a mechanism that only the "core key" will
retract.

I duped up the working key and only need one core key.

The machine used to dupe or cut IC core keys looks like this...
IMG_1314.JPG
That's the only keys this machine will dupe.
This little machine costs about $800.

IMG_1312.JPG
-------------------------------

Now then,
I promised pics of that ignition I was knee deep into Friday afternoon.

I removed the gas tank cover and disconnected the 2 pairs of wires from the switch and removed the switch.

I then disassembled the switch, which had 2 roll-pins, springs, 2 ball bearings and a retainer.
I then found the correct blanks.
IMG_1293.JPG

I then removed the 6 wafers, being careful to keep them in order.
IMG_1295.JPG
I took one blank and colored the blade with a red sharpie.
Then I put the blank into the core and scratched where each space a wafer goes.
IMG_1294.JPG

Then I loaded the blank into the code machine and lined up the cutter wheel to each mark.
IMG_1298.JPG
IMG_1297.JPG

I put the other blank into the core after replacing the wafers,
to gauge how deep to make the cuts.
IMG_1296.JPG

Folks,
We're talking in the thousandths of an inch for tolerances, and
I soon had the proper cuts on one side of the key.
It was a double sided, HD14, I believe....

I put the ignition back together, springs, ball bearings and all,
trying the key every step of the way.
Satisfied with the operation of the key,
I replaced the 2 roll-pins.
I then duped the fresh blank off of the one side just made, and then duped the other side of my "work key."
IMG_1299.JPG

Then all I had to do was reinstall the switch and put everything back together.

IMG_1302.JPG
--------------------------------------------
Next time with Scott's Locks,
We'll take a look at Schlage's "Securekey,"
schlage securekey.png
IMG_1316.JPG
and how to reset using a tool that looks like a comb, that I hand made....
IMG_1315.JPG
---------------------------------------------

I picked up 3 tomato plants and a hot pepper plant and planted them over the weekend.

IMG_1317.JPG
I gave them a nice drink and there was a nice little rain today.
Hope they got a good start....
----------------

And,
I see this evening that my Landlord is back from racing,
and it looks like he stayed off of the walls.
IMG_1318.JPG

Hope Y'All had a Great Weekend!

Best Wishes,

Scott

OH,
Almost forgot....

Enjoy!

Mike,
I'd heard the same thing and might have even posted comments once awhile back.....

I had gotten my hands on a 6 pinner and took 5 out and worked a 1 pin pick.
Then I added another pin.
Then another...
I could pick 4 but couldn't get past 5....

So do you still do Locksmithing?

Best,

Scott

Over the weekend, I saw Alice and loved up on her.
I never did see Olive....
But, as I said, she's a "hider."

My Landlord told me earlier tonight that he had left the door open, unattended for a moment,
last Friday,

and Olive took off.

runner.jpg
"Alright, Boys and Girls, We got us a runner."

I just returned from opening a car across town,
and when I pulled into the driveway, I saw Olive run to the side yard.
I immediately told my Landlord and he sprang into action.

He just now, as I'm typing this post,
Let me know that Olive is now home and appears no worse for her weekend "adventures."

Thank Goodness! :notworthy:

Best,

Scott

On the way home from opening that car,
I stopped and checked my PO Box.
(maybe 3-4 times a month?)

I had two letters from Switzerland waiting on me with coins requested in a swap.

IMG_1321.JPG

Coins from France and Germany. (pre-Nazi and occupation era)
And, a new "fetish" of mine, Swiss 20 Rappen and a few U.S.

Tomorrow, after classes,
I've a few coins requested from my collection to send to France for an exchange of some that I want....
I'm seriously considering starting a collection of Belgian 5 centimes.....
1894-1942.
Including variations of French and Dutch wording....

To commemorate the Blood Moon tonight, I offer up this tune:

Don.......

Don,

It is apparent to me that you appreciate Nature as much as I.

Just as much as all of Human's ancestors have.
Moon eclipse 2014: When can you see the 'blood moon'? - CSMonitor.com

From the Ancient Mayans, to North American Tribes, and throughout history,
Man has tried to grasp the cosmos, the seasons and the future.

Sure, plotting the celestial orbits is a science,
But,
Can it predict the future?
Really?

I say,
"Enjoy the short span one has of existence, always be beneficial and helpful
towards man and animal,
And enjoy the Wonders of Nature and life...."

We are all here for such a short time.....

I believe that we are not alone in the Universe and I would welcome an opportunity to meet our interstellar Brothers.

Dang,
Everyone already says that "I'm out there somewhere...."

Bill,
My Friend,

Always one to appreciate different eras, origins and genre of music,
Have you before heard of this band?

It is reminiscent of the music from the 70's and 80's that was heard in North America.

Perhaps something as similar as this....

Best Wishes,

Scott

My Love for all includes all animals....even mankind.....

How would Alice react?
Olive?
How about Otis?

I know Otis's reaction would be....

He'd yawn, look over and then butt his head, asking,

"When's Dinner?"

I apologize for scaring Y'all into thinking that I'm some kind of crazy, rabid dog that need's to be shot down.....

BUT.....

I'm no more crazy than anyone else;
I just have stresses that sometimes overwhelm me,
Perhaps Meds would help....

I remember many from my youth that were fun;
(none prescribed, but yet obtained.....)

Quaaludes, Hydrocodone, Alprazolam, Diazepam.....
I used to eat them like candy....

All downers....

Killing my pain.

What pain?

Don't even ask....

You really wouldn't understand......

Yeah, you may think of me now as "damaged merchandise,"

But, when TSHTF,
I'll be there, for you, my Friend.

However,
For now.....
What can I say?

That was years past....So long ago.....

I'm now clean and have found new life in my Passion!

Don't think I need any meds.....

Great posts scott, unfortunately its not showing any of your pics, just saying invalid link.
I still toy around with safes, do a Lil consultation, but when I lost my ability to carry I quit...and I don't quit anything!.
Since I can't see your pics, talking of roll pins..are you talking about the old mushroom pins ?
Feeling nostalgic now..I always enjoyed mystifying folks, like using impressioning a key to their car, using nothing but a blank, a pair of vice grips and a pippin file..would really float peoples boats lol.
Master keying..fun biggest job ever was 830 apartments.

For folks that don't know what I just said, with impressioning a key, you take a blank ( uncut ) key for whatever you need to fit the lock, mostly used on vehicles, take said blank clamp it with your vice grips, and ( tricky to explain ) basically you insert it into the lock and with some up and down motions the pins in the lock leave impressions on the key blank, so then you ( have to know wth you are doing lol ) and file the marks it leaves until the marks stop appearing, viola! Now you have a key...its more involved, but that's the basics.

Master keying is making a bunch of locks each use a different key, while also creating a master key which will operate all of the locks in the sequence, it is quite easy, though time consuming.

Could go into the fine art of opening safes/vaults..but I won't lol.
