It is basic, but looks good. I personally would want Macro and telephoto capability, but then I am a photographer and desire more of a camera than the average person. For the money it is a good buy for the average shooter. Frank...

While I dont own one, I have seen how they can be versatile, being rugged enough to strap to a helmet, available accessories, the fact you can take some under water, I always thought they would be a good investment.

I am thinking about buying one tomorrow simply since it is so rugged. This one is basically brand new and has the waterproof clear case and helmet holder, and normal case for $175. I will mainly use it for metal detecting videos and when I go ghost hunting;) other than that I've always wanted a camera I could use and not worry about destroying it by getting a little water on it

It depends on what you're using them for. Even in narrow frame mode they still have a fairly wide angle and everything in view looks much further away than it is. I had ordered some through work for a particular use and after playing with them, they did not work well for what I intended using them for. They are great on a motorcycle and other action events and showing things from the wearer's perspective but not great for capturing detail of anything past a few feet. If you're just going to wear one while metal detecting and to capture finds... I'm sure it will work great. The phone app that allows you to view from you phone and remotely turn on and off is really cool. I would see if one of your friends or family has one and try to borrow one to see if it produces what you're intending it for. Hope that helps.

I have an older GoPro Hero HD. It has been replaced once (One of the buttons got crushed) through the warranty and I had absolutely no problems with the replacement. I have the suction cup mount and it works great. Even after several years of use it still works well. I have upgraded mine to have the LCD Screen on the back. The newer ones have better color and a remote you can get. The one thing I can tell you if you get one is that they DO NOT FLOAT on their own. They have an excellent Mic on them but if you have the water proof case on everything will be muffled. I also like that it has a time lapse feature. Basically you can set it to take a photo ever second up to one photo every minute.

Update:

Well been really enjoying the go pro. Only used it a couple times but really like it. Bought a chest mount for it and am anxious to see what it's like. With the go pro app on iPhone it makes it easy to snap pics and video wirelessly from the phone to go pro. I haven't decided to keep it or to trade it off for a detector. Who knows. Any ideas

Oh I do too. They are amazing. I took mine out detecting the other day. And the picture quality is amazing and video is even better when on 1080p. I just can't decide whether to keep or trade her off. I bought the Ethernet cord for it too so I can put pics and video up on my 50" tv. Once my wifi at home gets fixed I can stream it to tv.
