In my younger years - I was known to hunt old spots out in the woods of New England during frozen ground (would never do this in a public spot) and used a thick bladed knife and a hammer to cut a plug - ground is usually only frozen like 4-5 inches - then dirt is soft under plug
got a pic of me hunting a drained beach with a sledge and chisel - this allowed me to get in before masses - glad I did beat others to a lot of gold and silver - I cleaned it pretty good too - remember running into guys month later when it thawed that hit there and said they got nothing - did not tell them Id been there till yrs after
got a nice mans ring with half carat diamond second day doing it - slipped a few times and bashed my hand too - so be careful if you try
