Received my' Draft Notice November 10, 1972, signed up with the U.S. Army on November 17, 1972 on a 10 day Delayed Entry to get my' sh*t in order and went active on November 27, 1972. I asked to go to Nam but they would not send me partly because I am the only surviving son of my mom and dad and the other reason was because there were 50,000 on the list ahead of me. The Recruiter asked where else I wanted to go and I said Germany, so they sent me there and almost didn't run me out. I was stationed at the Rock, Kirch-Goens, Germany (2nd Battalion, 33rd Armored of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Armored Division - the Tigers which was the last Battalion of Patton's Tiger Division) from April 1973 to June 1975. I then transferred to the 70th Transporation Co., 106th Transporation Battalion of the 37th Transportation Group in Giessen, West Germany in June 1975 and rotated out in August 1977. After some leave I arrived at USARR-V Fort Sheridan, Illinois in September 1977 and left the Army on March 30, 1978. I didn't really get into metal detecting until I took a job with Uncle Sam in Key West, Florida. I purchased my' first and probably best metal detector (depthwise), a White's 2000D in 1979, sent it back to White's a few months later for repairs and asked for a hot tune and did they ever hot tune it. It smoked every metal detector that it and myself ever came across from 1979 to October 1984. I could walk in another Detectorist's footsteps and find more coins and jewelry than they did. I would tell you how deep the 1953 Franklin Half Dollar (my' birth year) was that I got a signal from and dug up on Sands Beach in Key West around 1983 but you would not believe me. I had many witnesses to the find, many of which were building berms to keep the water out of the hole while I dug but I have no idea as to who they were, where they are or if they are even still alive today.

It seams like we have a lot of Vets that enjoy this hobby...was wondering if maybe somebody on this treasure net forum, could maybe talk with someone about putting a Vets section on the log in page...just a thought...

There is a discussion section somewhere called the "barracks" or something like that, but I am not sure if this is what you have in mind.

Yeah, I noticed that I am one of the younger one's in this bunch. Messes with my mind, because I had grown up playing "army" and with toy soldiers and hearing stories of WWII so I really don't feel like I am part of the crowd. I knew from probably 4 years old and up that I would be a Soldier one day. I did it for the service only. I didn't care about the money or college tuition.

I had a feeling that you were in West Germany around the same time that I was as I recognized the Tank in your Avatar as an M-60. In the second pic and under the barrel of the 105mm Main Gun, is that the top of the Training Barracks at Grafenwoehr or other barracks? The third pic looks like training at the Hohenfels Training Area, the only place I know that gets more rain than the Florida Everglades. The first time I was there it rained 59 days out of the 61 days we were there and the second time, it rained 57 days out of the 60 days we were there. We slept on air mattresses and the flooding was so bad, that many of us were floated out of our' tents in the Trains Area. Been to both Grafenwoehr and Hohenfelds quite a few times before I transferred to Giessen with the 70th Trans. Company. I was the first and only non-Tanker in 1st Brigade, 3rd Armorer Division at least up until I transferred, that Zeroed with the M-60 Main Gun on the very first shot. I visited Erlangen as well a Nuremberg quite a few times delivering parts and supplies and who knows but we might have met.

My main MOS was a 64C30 Truck Driver but I also trained for and was an Armorer for a little over a year, then went to POL (Petroleum Oil and Lube) hauling Diesel and Mogas, then went back to Open Line hauling ammo, supplies and troops. These were all at Kirchgoens. I then re-enlisted and transferred to Giessen where I drove International 2000-D Tractor Trucks and 4070A Cab-Over Tractor Trucks all over West Germany and Holland. Drove in SHAPEX '76, driving a Turkish Major General around while they had NATO talks at Mons-Chievres, Belgium. I then served as a General's Driver for Major General Michael D. Healy and as an Admin Specialist and Duty Driver to 22 Field Grade Officers and the Command Sergeant Major at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Army 1964-66. Ft. Leonard Wood, of course, then USASESCS, then 6/32 Arty North Ft. Lewis some months, then HHC Crash Rescue Gray Air base.

I am one who did not 'click' in the service, but I managed to get an honorable. Just didn't like anything about it. But, it did change me. I traveled more than anyone in the family at that time. Now, I live in Mexico in retirement. And, my wife and immediate family have traveled over much of the world.

Literally. A son and his wife lived in UAE for two years. And, when they traveled to the USA, they would turn east for a few miles to avoid hostile rockets, then go directly over the North Pole and down to the USA.

I was there in the '60's, more than once. I'm thankful to now be here. I think of my brethren who are not.
