I served 8 years in the peace gap between Korea and Nam thank heaven!
I, being a cache hunter, look at it as being a challenge. It's like a big battle field and you have to overcome the obsticles, that is verify the facts, find the location, get permission and then the hunt begins. Something like war, but it can be personally rewarding. Frank...-

I first got into the hobby while I was active duty because I wanted to see what was in the ground at the post I was stationed at. I really wish that I'd used a better machine, but I found a few interesting things regardless.

That basically set the hook though. I consider myself blessed in that my first hunts were on a completely virgin site with some history and finds that were shallow enough for my detector to hit.

I was in the 9th infantry division base camp at Dong tam in the Mekong Delta...never got into metaling detecting tell the mid 1980,s and have been doing it off and on over the years, got back into to it this last year to try and get a little more healthy and it seams to be working real well, and I really enjoy getting out and doing some dirt fishing...Nice to see some other Vets out doing the same thing...keep put that coil to the soil....

Navy '55 to '58. Joined when I was 17, so I was a "kiddie cruiser," and got out when I turned 21. I was looking back on it the other day, and I can't really remember what I was being paid, but my extra sea pay was $5 a month. I was in boot camp when Korea was declared over, so never was in any hostile environment, unless you call a joint in Subic hostile. Deployed to WesPac twice and the arctic once.

I spent a couple weeks at Dong Tam in the fall of 1970..For those who don't know the place it is nick named "mortar city!" Charlie liked dropping a few rounds on the chow hall around lunch time.It made the eating experience unique !
