Thanks to all for the replies and the links....Tom_in_CA kinda hit on what I was thinking about, when I see some posts of people finding gold coins....I'm wondering how big a financial impact it might have meant to the person that lost it and since it was found some 100 years later...how po'd the person must have been when they didn't find it after they realized they had lost it. Geeze.. I gotta stop now....my head hurts.

An ounce of gold has always had roughly the same purchasing power. Prices fluctuate here and there, but it's always been basically the same.

In the days of Ancient Rome, a nice tunic and robe cost about an ounce of gold.

During the Renaissance, a nice suit of clothes cost an ounce of gold.

A hundred years ago, a nice suit cost an ounce of gold.

Now check out the prices for a nice (high-quality) suit today.

and imho, you can't always trust inflation calculators. Look at actual factual first hand ads over many years to get a real idea of inflation.
