Centuries ago ..a pirate steals a fortune....before he can spend i...he is caught and executed....before he dies he leaves a coded message telling where his fortune is supposedly hid....
case in point
*Oliver Levasseur aka La Buse
Yannick Benaben and the fake "La Buse" cryptogram...? -Cipher Mysteries

Sounds to similar to "maps" of the The lost Dutchman mine of Arizona or Rommels treasure....or the Beale Ciphers.....if it sounds too good to be true it probalby isnt....

but maybe it is. If you don't seek you never find.

what better revenge on the "normal world" then for a doomed pirate to tell a tale of buried treasure so that the "normal folk" that are going to hang him ... will waste their lives looking for it due to their own greed...

That's why the small common caches are far more attainable, more of them, less well known and fewer seekers. :icon_thumright:

Heh, if I was going to be hanged I can see myself doing that. Of course that doesn't mean there's actually any treasure.

All such stories are hog-wash in my book. But you know why so many people believe ? Because of the human nature to "not want to be left out". It's so fun to believe in treasure, that we put our common sense reasoning on the shelf.
