Went back to my creek today to do some filming, just a little thing with 3 people in a canoe. Anyway, I'd going out ahead. Last fall a bobcat was around, it screamed at me once, that's why I almost had to change my clothes!

Anyway, I'm along the creek and there are raccoon tracks and great blue heron tracks.

and this here other track. BIG track. American Cougar. Really big, no claw marks in the fresh mud. Made today. Can I hide inside now?

Most of the local outside animals are disappearing around here. Fewer deer, only an occasional rabbit or groundhog, pheasants and chickens are disappearing and one neighbor
said the bald eagles nesting about a mile from here are taking out their small farm animals and the barn cats. And a lot less road kill than usual.

It's always something.

Unless you are a small woman or a child, you have nothing to worry about. It won't bother you. You are priveleged to have it around. It is a cat and all cats have the same mannerisms. Just be aware. If you are hiking in the woods understand that it may be curious. It will stalk you. Just watch your back trail and look for that typical long tail flicking above the brush. Once discovered it takes off. It is a magnificent animal and will move on to hunt somewhere else when game becomes scarce. I have a place north of Uvalde, Texas and we have a couple usually around. They wander over from Mexico and that was especially true when we had 4 years of drought. These cats wander over a large area. Now, if you feel threatened, use a large bore rifle or pistol and kill it. It ain't that hard to do. That's why there are so few today. They have been hunted damm near to extinction. You should feel priveleged, especially if you have a sighting...Just my opinion.

I'm in Maryland, north of Baltimore and south of Philly. Not your usual cougar territory.

Ours is a short history as to who haunts where.
Some places critters are making a small comeback and when young ones set out to find their way ,expansion of specie range occurs and less optimum habitat gets occupied.

Your notice is noted though!

Bears, coyotes, bobcats, are keeping things in check more around me now.
I put a tape measure on a track years back for a picture where the girlfriend had a cougar cross in front of her.
Of course folks would have thought us nuts to have claimed it official..let alone announce it beyond a select few ears.
Or worse ,panic as they have with bears.
Keep them birds of yours safe!

Thanks for the post.
We have lots of Cougars here in NYC. Some of them wear perfume and hardly any clothes. I really wish that some of them would wear more clothing. lol

Good grief. Anyway, it has rained three times since then, and if I see more I'll get a picture and a plaster cast if possible.

Anyone wants a big cat.....come on out!! Shipping might be tricky....:laughing7:
Cougars are an Oregon success story. After being nearly eliminated by the mid-1960s, today they have a healthy population. The current cougar population in Oregon is estimated to be more than 6,200 as of October 2015.

Saw one on a friend's hunting cam, was suprised not a animal you see often here. On the same cam, neighbour showed me a picture of a female wolverine. Smaller but meaner than the big cat but love to see there's more life in the woods than we can imagine.

seriously, keep a gun handy, just in case. And don't worry about making casts. Very unusual for a big cat to be there. Maybe a former pet, maybe not a montain lion. Just be careful...

# 1, I advice you my friend, when outside carry a big shotgun. The wild big cats may not eat you, but, why take the chance.

I would not sweat the being eaten thing

if it happens you can die happy knowing you are helping an endangered animal survive

They ain't endangered if they're 45 minutes from Baltimore and 1 hour from Philly. I wonder if they can be trained.......
