I doubt if this mushroom is edible, but I was just wondering what it's called. It's definitely a very large mushroom (or fungi)! Any guesses would be appreciated.

It could be a variety of the White Shelf Mushroom, but identification of mushrooms is a tricky business. maby a Dryads saddle but now thats my best guess.

The mushroom business can be pretty risky, I would be sure before frying it up. I knew a family who would go out after a rainstorm and collect mushrooms, I way always worried that one day they might accidentally grab a poisonous one. I guess that if you know enough about what types are safe or not, you can get a very tasty dish. Now I am craving stuffed mushrooms lol!

If that is a locust tree it is attached to, then it would be a bracket fungus. Non edible is my guess.

I think it is a cousin to the Athletis Fungetis.
Be sure to wear odor eaters after coming in contact with that plant.

There's no magic in that fungi, don't consume. One thing about mushrooms they might look edible, taste great, but it could result in a slow death. Even after looking at them for 40 yrs I don't pick and eat unless I'm 100% sure it's the right species for consumption. One mistake could be the last, why take the risk.

Not a turkey tail. Too large and too orange. It is a chicken of the woods, which is edible and delicious, but easily confused with jack-o-lantern, which will make you ill. I like to look at them VERY closely prior to consumption.

Google images will confirm my ID.

My survival instincts tell me NOT to eat any Mushroom found in the woods----------------regardless of how hungry I am.
Find some worms or grasshoppers.

This is the rare Middle TN. "miniature elephant ear mushroom". They should NEVER be consumed! The only way to know for sure if it is safe is if a sex toy is found near it. Obliviously this is a safe one. Go heavy on the butter... Their GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'll pass on that one. Would have looked pretty impressive on top of a 16 ounce porterhouse...

From what I've read none of the tree types are edible.

The ones on the ground aren't any good either.:icon_scratch: Just the ones you find in a sealed tin are the ones you know are OK to eat. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.:angel10:

Generally an edible mushroom that normally grows on a tree needs to be growing on oak. For instance, if you do find an edible mushroom like hen of the woods, it needs to be growing on oak to still be edible. I would love to get more into mushroom hunting, but the safest way is to go foraging with a pro. However, there are, IIRC, around 5 edible mushrooms that are easy to identify and do not have a poisonous identical look-alike, but one must be able to understand more than just what color it is.

I do have a hen of the woods dehydrated and packed into jars. At my in-laws, there is a chicken of the woods, but someone else always snags it before we get there! I have also harvested and eaten chanterelles and morels.

I am also learning that it matters what kind of tree it is growing on. Some people have gotten sick from Chicken of the Woods growing on pine trees.

I hate Mushrooms so It's one thing I don't have to worry learning about. To my thinking, all mushrooms are toadstools.
